Norton Internet Security 2010 does not like patch 1.03

Post by Solaristics »

I'm trying to install 1.03 and Norton keeps putting it into quarantine.

It initially flags it up as new with few Norton user downloads, as I would expect since it came out just now, and I override this. But then Norton catches it again and says it is behaving suspiciously and deletes it. I just want to check that a virus hasn't crept into this patch by accident before I disable Norton and install it.

For what it's worth Constans, I downloaded patch 1.03 this morning and installed it. The latest Kaspersky Internet Security suite didn't bat an eyelid. Not only was the patch file clean, but the files it installs are also passed by Kaspersky after I just ran a manual scan on the install folder.

No problems with Trend Micro. And it's generally very finicky!

Thanks for the comments. I decided to override NIS in the end and there were no problems. I guess I was being a little over cautious, but it wasn't impossible that the file could have been compromised.

The problem with Nortion 2010 (we develop on system protected by this) is a new feature included in it by them called Sonar. Sonar is not an anti-virus program as such as it does not detect viruses. It looks at applications and tries to predict if it could be a virus that they have not yet recorded. So it never tries to delete the virus, it never asks the user. It just deletes the program it thinks could be a risk.

As a tool its a little bit of a crude blunt instrument. In our case it likes the FOG program but does not like the installer program we use. As it is one of the most popular installers on the market we are staying with it and do expect Norton to fix Sonar.

So for now to install on a 2010 system just turn Sonar off for a few minutes (its on the main 2010 menu as an option) then download and install FOG then turn Sonar back on. From then on Norton will let you play FOG and multiplayer games with zero issues.
