Some Scenarios

Post by JocaRamiro »

I have been playing for a few days. I just found that, on some scenarios, the system crashes. So far these include Cynoscephalae, and Heraclea. Note, it is not just that these are big, Carhae, Indistavio, and Pharsalus all opened.

Hello Keith,

Two comments:

1. I am running a Dell latitude using Windows XP. I have made no attempt to have all other applications closed. Howver right now there is only Outliook Express and Internet Eplorer.

2. Sometimes it crashes, sometimes it does not. I think there is a slight tendency for this to be with the bigger games.

Any thoughts?

Mead Walker (JocaRamiro)

PS: is there a way to run the game in a window so it can be minimized easily? This is a good (essential?) feature.

I am not quite sure how to get to this. I have an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Mobile. It appears to have 384MB of memory.

Problem with the game crashing

Post by JocaRamiro »

This is a return to the proper thread after creating and terminating the offensive "Son of Some Scenarios".

I can still report that, when I try to load some of the more complex scenarios, the game crashes. But, it does not always do that.

I was asked for information on my system, and it is provided in the earlier mesages in this thread.

Have you updated your video and audio drivers to the latest versions? It might help.

Cheers

When the game crashes what error message do you get - that will help us find the problem. Also a list of which scenarios woudl be useful. If it is the larger ones it might suggest some sort of memory isssue. Is your RAM all ok and how much do you have?

1. Do you have any other applications open when the game crashes?
2. If If your laptop running in 'high performance mode' for the battery/power management settings?
3. Do you have the mains adaptor connected when playing?

Crashing Scenarios

Post by JocaRamiro »

Thanks for the responses.

The biggest thing to say is that the problem is intermittant, so it loads some of the time and not others. The problem is with the bigger ones. Most frequent crashes are with Cynoscedphalae, and secondarily with Heraclea. Pharsalus has crashed, but does so less often. Silarus did so once, but usually does not. Metaurus seems to be pretty steady.

I don't have the error message recorded. I do have other applications open. The power scheme is set as "Maximum Performance", but I have no idea of the implications of t hese power schemes. I am not sure what is meant by "mains adaptor", can you clarify?

I think the RAM is ok. I apear to have 1.99GB of it.

I will let you know if things get difficult again.

I assume Keith means the AC adapter as the "mains adapter", e.g. not running purely on battery power.

1. Just had three Hereclea crashes. I get a Windows message "Field of Glory has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.", so no Field of Glory error message.

2. AHh, regarding main adapter - yes I am running on AC, not on battery.

An additional remark

Post by JocaRamiro »

I find that, if I open the game, and then go to a problem scenario, it tends to crash. But, if I first open a small scenario, make a move, and then open the problem one, it often will be OK. Does this tell anybody anything?

Updating this issue after installing Rise of Rome

Post by JocaRamiro »

Hello Admin,

I am now getting this problem again - but much worse. It now crashes on games - e.g. Great Plains - that never crashed before. Also, the problem became less frequent even with the troublesome games, e.g., Pharsalus. Now it seems to happen - that is for the last day or so - everyting I try to load a game.

I took a screen print of the error message, but I do not see how to attach it. Note, it is a Windows message., not an FOG one. So FOG is simply shutting down when it tries to load some games.

Note, you asked me some questions about my system - the answers I gave are on earlier items within this thread.

FOR ALL USERS WITH AN INTERNAL GRAPHICS CARD
This will vary by windows and browser version :-

1) Go to windows updates (load internet explorer - tools - windows update)
2) Go to optional updates.
3) Go to hardware updates.
4) Select any updates for the graphics card.

After restarting the PC do this:
a) Go to your power management settings.
b) Select full power (balanced on most Windows 7 laptop PC's)
c) If using a laptop make sure you have a power cable selected.
d) Do not play with any other applications open.

This should solve most issues with game crashing out for a lack of graphics resources in the larger scenario's. We are looking at ways of trying to make the bigger battles less graphics resources heavy but there is no silver bullet other than a dedicated graphics card.

I'm using a Dell Studio XPS 13" notebook with NVIDIA 9500M G graphics (which is a hybrid SLI 9400M G +9200M GS), Vista 64 bit and I'm running all the time in power saving mode without any problem.

Is there a minimum amount of video memory (or shared video memory) required for the game? That could well be the critical resouce for video rather than the latest driver or chips. My impression is that the game isn't using the latest and greatest as far as video adapter features go.

Some Scenarios - changing computers

Post by JocaRamiro »

Hello,

Based on Keith's remarks above, I do not have graphics capacity in my current computer - and it is not practical to install more. So, I would like to transfer the game to another computer to try that one. However, I cannot see how to do that. I tried to re-download using my original email from Slitherine. However, a) I bought Field of Glory too long a go. b) When I enter the Rise of Rome order #, it is not recognized. Any suggestions?
