Best Han Figures
Seeing the two themes just posted for this Cold Wars has got me thinking about possibly trying to quickly put together an army from Empire of the Dragons - especially since I don't have any Asian armies presently. I was thinking of a Warring States/Han army, even if it may not be the best tactical choice, because I figure it's a good standard, "must have in collection eventually", Asian style army with the potential to morph into a variety of other armies in the future.
But if I do the Han, I was wondering what people here might think what would be the best choices for figures in 15mm. I don't mind spending a little extra to get really good quality figures, but I'm not sure what my options are. I know that Essex has a range, but I would like to get something sculpted a little better if possible. I know that Black Hat makes a range also, but I don't know about its quality. Anyway, any input on recommendations would be much appreciated.

The Essex Cavalry and foot Crossbow are excellent but the dagger-axe and spearmen are a bit long in the tooth. They suffer from the typical noodle spear issues that many of the long weapon Essex figs have but the general arrangement of the limbs holding the weapons make it a bit difficult to replace with wire without messing up the other details. There is a post I think by Marco with pics that show the figures in question.

I ran a warring states army for some years under 7th (old list as a 'Mongols with Chariots' type - max Light Horse, 3-4 chariot units, minimum foot and plenty of Light Infantry) worked fairly well (though the list allowed too much Light Horse for the period.
The Essex Han figures are perfectly servicable with Leather 'hauberks' on the Halberdiers in Guard pose and the 'Javelinmen' looking unarmoured but advancing. The Single pose crossbowman was a bit limiting but the archers were nice. The chariots were too big to fit a 40 mm deep base. I alaso had some Chariot Miniatures figures which were not as nice and some QT Ch'in (Qin) which were more appropriate for the period with the 'coat of plates' armour. The are square plates of bronze held together by ties and were almost certainly laquered so bright colours are a definite possibility. I did note the absence of the 'Imperial Guard' often referred to.
