Roman Civil Wars. Only Late Republic, Principate or Dominate lists allowed.

1000 pts. 2 players team for each army.

Elimination rounds.

Winning team then splits army and fights to determine the final victor.

Ave Caesar.

There has been a similar interesting themed comp at our club this year. Each pair of doubles controls a roman army and a "barbarian" army either sassanid, gallic or german.

Step one is to go out from Rome with your roman army and defeat a barbarian army (ie play with your roman troops vs an opposing teams barbarian army. If you lose you are knocked out and it you win you return to Romw with your veterans and reputation intact.

All of those who return to rome then fight each other to become emperor.

Nice! I like that concept. Some people have compared the machinations of Roman politics to ascendancy within the Mafia. Your system would certainly savour of that!

Go make your bones in Parthia or Gaul - even stir something up for the opportunity such as Dacia or Caledonia - then come back with respect to struggle for capo de tutti capi!

I like it a lot.

Just a thought, since you have 2 players on each side make them each make up a 500 point army, but each half has to stick to the list maximum and minimum etc. That way when they have to duke it out amongst themselves they will have even armies which you may not be able to break down 500 points evenly if its all one big army list. Of course Romans are pretty much the same in the lists so it might be ok in the end.

That is a good idea. I am going to chew this over. A lot of Roman players are frustrated with conventional tournament formats, which don't give them sufficient time for the foot to bring it down to a scutum to the face and a gladius to the solar plexus. This is a double frustration since most Roman players are truly interested in Roman military history, if not downright Romanophiles. They have a real enthusiasm for and desire to play that particuar army - not just numbers crunch any mathematically attractive tournament list.

The Darwinian nature of Roman politics just begs for a final showdown, last man standing contest, and I think there are enough Roman players out there that such an event would be doable.

Your suggestion that each 'consul' bring his own private army is a good one, and very much in keeping with the period. I recently bought an old copy of Kenneth Wellesley's 'The Long Year A.D. 69', and have gotten that Roman treachery bug again. Combined with the fact that FoG actually lets Romans perform like Romans, I think this would be a fun theme.
