Miquelets in French armies

Post by nikgaukroger »

From Xavier
Moreover, I suggested Miquelets as Superior for multiple reasons:

Equipment I: they were armed with matchlock muskets capable of delivering far better firepower than standard muskets (more precise and better fire rate). Actually the Generalitat government ordered to equip the new regular regiments that joined the French army with the same weapons, but the manufacturers located in central Catalonia where not able to produce so many matchlock muskets in such a short time.

Equipment II: they were armed with 1 or 2 pistols on top of the muskets that were used mainly in ambushes, after the musket salvos and just before retiring under cover again.

Training: Miquelets were very tough troops capable of marching through difficult terrain for days, hit far behind the enemy lines and disappear again. In this sense they followed the tradition of very good light / medium infantry of Catalonia (from the Iberians through the Almughavars), result of the Catalan orography.

Morale: while in most cases mercenaries were allowed to fight for their new masters if they were taken prisioners, there was no mercy for the Miquelets. Therefore they mostly preferred to fight to death rather than surrender. Moreover, from the fall of Barcelona to the Spanish in 1652, the Catalans themselves divided between those still supporting the independence and the French party, and those supporting the Spanish cause. This led to a kind of internal civil war fought mainly between Miquelet parties raised by both sides once again without any kind of mercy.
All those points convinced the French to convert some of them into the first regiments of fusiliers de montagne in the French army, where they were considered as elite units.

Taking all this points into account and the fact that there are other superior light foot with musket in the game (like the German Schützenkompanien), I don’t see why can’t we keep the superior granding for them as in my first draft…

I altered the quality to Average to be cautious and because LF shooting already inlcudes a measure of being better shots through the fact they retain the same shooting dice regardless of range.

However, some bettle examples would assist an argument for Superior. In factas Miquelets are usually described (albeit I only know of this for later periods) as irregular guerilla types I think we need confirmation that they did assist in set piece battles to warrant their inclusion in the list in such numbers. People will certainly ask this question IMO.
