Spanish scutarii

Post by broeders »

Bought some pendraken 10mm spanish scutarii. General question - should each unit in a group be painted the same colour (incl. shield) so they all look the same OR should each unit in a group be painted in a different colour so they look like individuals in a group.

Depends on your personal taste. they look good being uniformed but I suppose to be historically accurate you would make them individual with different shields etc. They basically wear white, bleached with urine for that nice clean glow, so they will be more or less uniform in their clothing.

1. Everyone should be different to give BGs a wild look...but 2 or 3 within a BG could be similar to represent various tribal groups joining in.
2. White was traditional (with or without ye olde red stripe) but Celtiberians were also known for blackish tunics and cloaks.
3. Shields probably a wild variety of colours and shapes.
4. Lots of standards mixed in with the BG to represent various towns contingents.
5. Various weapons (pilum-type stuff, swords (those nasty spanish ones :)...javelins, etc..

I have a 28mm Spanish army, and what I did is paint each of four different Iberian units with the same shields for the unit on the theory that everyone from the same tribal grouping used the same design. Then my big unit of Celt-Iberians is more wild looking, with everyone carrying a different shield. There is no basis in historical fact for this (to the best of my knowledge), but I like the way it looks.
