any advice for a 600 point game?

First event at FAll In next week is a 600 point game, Rise of Rome and Immortal Fire army books. It seems like a very small game on a very large board. Would you go light horse/lancer like Saka, or would you risk a more balanced force like Seleucid knowing that you might not be able to cover the front.

Any advice or experience graefully received.

One would hope that this is not being played on a full 6 by 4 table. If it is then Graeco Bactrian - the all mounted version will work quite well.

Personally I would run 600 point games on 5 by 3 or even 4 by 3 tables and cut the duration.

The 600 point (Friday) event will be run on a 6x4 board. The 900 point (Saturday) event will be run on a 6x4 as well. There is some measure of experiment involved, to see how the game works with differing levels of troop density.

I will be asking for comment from the players in order to determine their preferences for future events.

I have played 600 points on a 6 by 4, it works if both armies are similar in mobility. If one is much more mobile then the less mobile army is in deep poo.

I started my selucid army at 600 points, 2 pike blocks, 1 elephant unit, companions, 1 unit of cats, 1 offensive spear protected, 2 light horse 1 with spears other with bows and swords, and a unit of javelins if I remember right.

Could be that it could easily get flanked by a fast moving enemy, but did fare well against MR Romans. The companions are your most mobile force, perhaps with the LH they might be able to blunt any fast moving enemy for you.

I've done starter armies on 5x4 and that worked fine - one was more mobile than the other but knocking 12" off the width (we had a 6x4 table) seemed to keep it balanced and gave us somewhere to put rule books, drinks, etc.

Obviously we know 5' width works for 650 points

And casulties. That way it avoids some idiot knocking them on the floor and treading on them (twice) like some idiot did with his out of production Swiss at Roll Call this past weekend. :(

Did the anonymous person not learn his lesson the first time Tim? Or was it just subconcious punishment for their poor performance?

Remembers a game eons ago at Cobo Hall in Detroit...where the loser's mini's were set on the floor and had a hammer taken to them!

Any poor performance might have resulted in the owner being knocked on the floor, the troops performed as well as they were allowed. No, the problem was that said anonymous person did not work out how he had done it the first time - he had to wait for the second time to find that out (despite having seen his opponent put the one base loss for the round away rather than leave it where it could be knocked down!)

600 points on a 6x4 is a nice size for 25mm

Being a 25mm player it never occured to me that it might be a 15mm army he was worried about. That would leave lots of open space alright.
