Odd evade

Had a weird evade situation occur in our game today that did not seem to be covered by the rules.
I had a unit of light foot bow that rolled up when charged. I was on a steep hill and to my rear was a unit of offensive spear at an angle in colum trying to get over the hill to join the main fray.
My evade ended up with the 2 middle stands of the light unit ending up in the offensive spears, since part of the lights were in front of them spears that was clear ground, and due to the angle of the spears the other half of the battle group ended in clear ground too.
Right beside my spears was my camp and of course the table edge.
the 2 bases that interpentrated the spears cant carry on through since there is a camp directly on the other side of the spears, the rest of the unit is in the clear so after looking in the rules best I could figure was that the unit stops short of the spears.
Thats how we played it that make sense to the rest of you?

Hard to be sure from your description but it sounds okay to me.
