Good morning all
I'm new to Field of Glory and I want to try it out. I bought the main rulebook I'm going to try this out with a friend of mine. Can someone recommend two evenly matched armies that would be good for beginners? I'm hoping to shy away from the typical Roman vs. Barbarian matchups.
Also, does anyone know if there will be demo games at Fall In?

Re: New to Field of Glory
I might possibly try a matchup of Late Republican Romans against any of the pike-armed Successor armies. Carthaginian against Mid Republican Roman is very good also. Both of these games are fairly balanced matchups, and they give an opportunity to try a variety of tactics and troop types without getting too complicated. For introductory games, I would try to avoid any of the light horse, shooty armies.LongIslandGamer wrote:Good morning all

Perhaps some feudal baronial civil war, or Saxon/Viking shieldwall bash?
I would lean towards primarily shock armies of comparable troop balances and armor.
Hoplite armies would also be good. Perfect in fact.
I do suggest starting with only a few different troop types. The game mechanisms are already plenty to chew on even before they are filtered differently through the multitude of various troop types.
Good luck and send us an AAR. The game is far superior IMO to the vast majority of preceding systems.

Blathergut and I play Late republican romans versus Selucids, fairly evenly matched armies. If you want you could try any of the successor armies from Rise of Rome or the more generic early successor lists from Immortal fire.
Really depends on what you like to fight with. Romans is lots of heavy foot, succesors can have a lot of cav with the pikes and tend to be a bit short on the MF types.
Good luck with your choice.

There will be no demonstration games at Fall In! (unless someone else wants to organize one). There is no problem with newbies coming to watch the tournament games, or even to play. There is no faster way to learn than to dive right in. If you have read the rules and have the figures--or can borrow the figures--you are welcome to play.
