Changing ranks on the move

Recently PLOYD asked a question about swaping a bow armed MF rank with a spear armed rank while stationary. The answer was, "This can only be done through expansion or contraction." What if the BG is moving? Can I swap ranks as part of a move from the "Advances" section of the move table?
