Some charge examples for Spikemesq

Post by petedalby »

I'll probably regret doing this but I thought I'd post a few pictures which may or may not illustrate charges and evades.

The first image is a charge straight ahead.

Image

The light horse do not have to evade as they are not a target of the charge.

The 2nd image is a charge with a wheel. The direction of charge will now take the cavalry into both the cavalry and the light horse. As the chargers will still fight with 2 bases there is no problem with this.

Image

Since it would be very unwise for the Light Horse to stick around they may choose to evade or if they're feeling brave they can CMT to stand.

Image 3 is the same charge but with the LH stepped back out of charge reach. However the charging BG will step forward into them if they stand.

Image

Like so:

Image

Clearly this is not a good thing for the LH so they elect to evade - image 5:

Image

Image 6 introdces an intercepting BG of enemy knights.

Image

The intercepting player moves the full 4 MU to ensure that the charging cavalry can not step forward into the bow armed cav.

Image

So the charge move ends like this:

Image

In the next example, the Knight's intercept zone is further away, and by angling their line of charge, the cavalry can avoid the knights declaring an intercept.

Image

Since the chargers contact with 2 bases this is still legal.

Image

The step forward into the LH is not permitted since base #3 is not in front edge contact so no step forward is permitted.

Image

Hope that helps?

Excellent! A picture paints a thousand forum posts. Worth appending to the FAQ or similar.

Nice examples and a great idea. Covers most of the common issues.

Great stuff Pete but you have not done the stepping forwards correctly :(

A file can only step forwards if it will contact enemy so where you have a diagonal line of bases that situation can't happen.

Right. He was showing that even with stepping forward, you would not contact the enemy, so no stepping forward was possible, leading to the correct end position in the next picture. Max step forward is 2 MU in any case.

Cheers Hammy - but, as Gozerius has noted, I do (try to) explain that in the next shot.

Thanks for the positive comments - not sure if it works for our Colonial cousins or not though?

These are pretty straightforward. Take it up a notch and include some outliers. :)

Note that the last charge avoiding the intercept is not legal.

By wheeling, the chargers only contact one base at impact (AFAICT from the image). Charging directly ahead will contact 2 bases (but will trigger an intercept). There may be a wheel that still connects with 2 bases and avoids the intercept, but it must hit 2 or more bases to be legit.

I think the angle of hte picture is deceptive thet text does say hitting with two bases, I imagine it is the corner just barely clipping it.

I'm sorry if the picture is misleading. The text that follows it was meant to be unambiguous.

What does that mean? How complicated do your games get?

I'm not sure when I'll have the time to look at this again but if you give some more context I'll try to give it a go.
