Timurid list advice/tactics for comps (is there none!)

Post by pyrrhus »

Just wondering what wisdom the veteran Timurid players can pass on to someone who is just starting their army. I noticed that the army is being taken more often and wanted to know what they are doing (tips tricks Army list combo fav's etc etc ) thanks

ask a q about lancer cav. I can answer that. Haven't seen timurid used a lot, much the same as any other shooty cav/LH army, but you can have some knights and spend time getting them in the right place whilst the rest of the army faff around.

no knights in the timurid list (elephants though) I think somme lancers if you go with an allies dont have the book with me I wanted to build a supperior cav list and see how it does in open tourneys but there are none here .The list also allows dismounting which could be great for ruff terrain and I liked the drilled superior manuverability if that can work .closest thing I could find were ottomans on the web .I have seen people take timurid in the last few comps and do well they are just not reponding .Most of these armies end up looking like a knight equipt version of parthian/sassinids I wanted to see if a cav army without lance could work in this system . So much for buying those figs, should have bought the (accepted armys ) like sassinids  oh well live and learn

Sorry, was thinking Ilkhanid with the knights.

Anyway shooty cav do very well. First worlds Seljuk won.

And Ottoman won the worlds this year, and the later period Britcon. Same player so not a super army thing.

I prefer Mamluk though

Ilove ottomans, i adore ottomans, i think there is a list that can allways hide a surprise, and the posibilities of combining troops is great, good Cv, "cheap" bw LH, sme Kn allied, some 8 points handgun BG... brilliant janissaries... lots of L Foot, from poor to sup, from bow to jav, to sling or Xb...

I love them all!!

timurids r us

Post by navigator »

Hi I run have run Timurid this year and i thoroughly enjoy playing with it. I am still getting to grips with the rules but Timurid holds up well. There are several things to consider with the opposite sides of the coin being 1-what armies will i face and 2. what army do i like to use.

Against infantry it can run around well and use of elephants helps
against mixed cav/knights it can shoot and run
against skirmisher types like ottomans i have failed miserably-mainly though my own incompetence.

The reason for using Timurids other than love of history and a benevolent leader of men is that the army gets elephants. Otherwise its just another shooty bow cav lh army. I generally run it with lots of LH and several bow shooty cav. Standard tactics aply -shoot and then charge if necessary. the elephants add punch where needed. But they need to be used correctly otherwise they will implode. 2 units need to be used together in most instances and supported well too. When this happens they can win well. When it doesnt they tend to lose.

Am considering gaznavid now for more chargy cav and more elephants just for a change

I can send you my lists etc if you wish. Its a very colourful army and is well worth it. I could tell you about when i was last in samarkand too, .... dancing prostitutes, secret police, getting lost drunk at midnight in downtown smarkand etc etc

Tips is
Never drink too much vodka then try to visit Timur's tomb at midnight and then forget the way home to your hotel.

But old policemen in a lada car can be very helpful in guiding you home.
