Painted my first FOG units - MRR Romans

Post by pease1 »

Two Roman Velite battle groups. I painted them the same in case I want to use them as one large unit.

Very nice! And go on, I alway like to see MRR. ;)

One little criticism: The (unpainted?) white stones catch the eye a little too much. Perhaps tone them done a little bit? I use white stones myself on my Numidian bases.
I wash them with GW's brown ink and then drybush them with Bleached Bone. Like here:

pease 1 - Nice unit! I wish you all the luck with Romans that I did NOT have - I made Varus look good! That is a very fine unit though.

Mehrunes - A fair point about the stones, although I think a gray wash on the stones would serve the velites better. I have to rebase all of my Scyths one of these days because I used so much distracting cat litter on the bases. Perhaps the wash would tone them down to a more acceptable level though. BTW, I truly ENVY the beautiful job you did on the various hide shields! Very, very nice.

Thanks but I don't deserve your envy - these are Little Big Men decals.
But... it's some work to get them on shields of manufacturers they aren't meant for.
And mix the matching paint to work up the borders. *gg*

Good point about the grey stones, maybe this would look better in this case. So use a black wash and then drybrush grey. :)

Thanks for the tip about the stones. They are Woodland Scenics Talus and are quite porous. I'm sure I could apply a wash to a whole pile of them before using. Might be an easy thing to do. I'll give it a try.

Next up, the Triarii.

I painted them in BGs of 4s even though I'll most likely use them in 2s. I figured the extra flexibility to deploy them as 4s couldn't hurt. I went with long-ish spears. Maybe too long. I'm not sure. I think they scale to about 10' long.

No stones on these bases. There was no room after I crammed all the figures on!

Just drop sone Sepia ink on them and they will be fine. Sepia ink is great btw, I use it in prefernce to actual black as it is much less "harsh" looking.

Where's the funny hats? I'm very disappointed, no funny hats. I won't go on holiday to Crete because I don't want to spoil the mental image I have of Cretans in funny hats.

Funny hats are for other Greeks, Cretans need bucklers and swords!

Nevertheless, nice work!

The OG figures could be any 'generic' archer figure in my opinion. I would have preferred something a bit more characteristically 'Cretan' but they're painted now so I'll use them. Since they're so generic I can probably use them for other armies easily so I guess that's the silver lining.

I prefer generic figures. Just thought someone else should suffer the funny hats as well.

I often go for a mix of generic and non-generic. For really high impact/visibility units I like non-generics. If you are doing Teutonic Knights, paint up the military order guys in the right kit. The less interesting/noticeable guys hanging in the back, less so. I use almost completely non-describe Hordes/Mobs as who even really looks at those guys (not to mention i knock them onto the floor at least once a game...)?

Well, the hat was a typically Greek hat, so it was not a characteristic of Cretan archers. It seems that the small embraced shield was the most distinctive thing they had. Anyway, I like yours as you can use them in many other armies fielding archers.

Nice velites, although I preferred the ones with wolf skins. It is just a matter of the miniature, not the painting. By the way, your project goes very fast. Well done! I like when people paint their armies fast to have a nice looking battle.
