Game freezing / screen blanking

Hi

I'm starting to play FOG2:Medieval.

As soon as I start playing scenarios (I'm on Tutorial 2), I get occasional, sometimes frequent moments where the screen freezes, the sound glitches and the screen momentarily reverts to whatever I have on in the desktop. After a moment it returns back to normal and I can continue to play. However, every so often the freeze / screen swap is permanent. I can still hear the game behind, but I can't do anything. If I shift-tab to bring up the windows switching screen, I can kill the FOG2 instance and then get the following error message.

*** Unhandled exception! ExpCode: 0xC0000005 ExpFlags:0 ExpAddress:0x0055EAC2 Please Report!

I'm playing via Steam. I have tried various combinations of fullscreen/windowed and fiddling with resolution settings. I've seen other threads mention this error.

Similarly to this thread viewtopic.php?p=1023381&hilit=rezX#p1023381, I didn't have an options.txt file in the main game folder (in steamapps/common for me). I tried to create one as suggested in that thread but that didn't seem to help!

The options.txt file is in Documents/My Games/FieldOfGloryMedieval

What are your system specs?
