CAMPAIGN ANNO DOMINI 1740
CAMPAIGN ANNO DOMINI 1740
The campaign is set in Central-Western Europe in the year 1740 and involves the participation of five states: Anglo-Hanover, Austria, Bavaria, Denmark, and France.
Each state has a Treasury, initially set at 60,000 Thalers, a National Morale, initially set at 6 and which can vary from a minimum level of 0 to a maximum of 12, and also controls two provinces, each characterized by a specific terrain:
• Anglo-Hannover: Hannover (hilly) and Gelderland (agricultural)
• Austria: Bohemia (hilly) and Silesia (wooded)
• Bavaria: Bavaria (agricultural) and Baden (hilly)
• Denmark: Holstein (wooded) and Mecklemburg (agricultural)
• France: Lorraine (wooded) and Wallonie (hilly)
The campaign takes place over five turns, divided into an Orders Phase, during which each state is allowed two actions, and a Combat Phase, during which battles are fought.
ORDERS PHASE
During the Orders Phase, states will take turns gaining priority according to the following schedule, ensuring no state is at a disadvantage:
Turn 1: ANG, AUT, BAV, DAN, FRA
Turn 2: BAV, FRA, ANG, AUT, DAN
Turn 3: FRA, DAN, AUT, BAV, ANG
Turn 4: AUT, ANG, DAN, FRA, BAV
Turn 5: DAN, BAV, FRA, ANG, AUT
The first state in the priority order has 36 hours to issue its orders in the campaign thread on the Pike & Shot Forum, starting from the turn’s initiation. The following state has 36 hours from when the previous state issued its orders to submit its own. The timestamp on the message in the upper right corner will serve as proof of submission. If a state fails to meet the deadline, it forfeits its moves for that turn and may only defend itself in the Combat Phase.
POSSIBLE ACTIONS
The actions are the following, considering that none of them can be repeated twice in the same turn, except for the Standard Attack.
• Taxation: The state collects 40,000 Thalers from its citizens and can immediately use them in the next action.
• Fortification: The state fortifies one of its fully controlled provinces by spending 35,000 Thalers. Fortifications takes effect immediately and may come into play during the Combat Phase of that turn, giving the province a higher chance of resisting the effect of a defeat of its army (as further detailed in the Combat Phase section). Fortifications don't affect the attribution of morale points that will be awarded as usual.
• Standard Attack: The state launches an attack from one of its provinces (also if only partially controlled) to a neighboring province by spending 20,000 Thalers.
o The province from which the attack is launched must be directly accessible from one of the territories that were originally part of the State. Otherwise, attacks from that province can only be directed towards provinces that allow reestablishing a connection with the homeland (e.g., if Denmark first conquered Hanover, Baden, and Bavaria, and then lost Baden, Bavaria would only be able to attack Baden). If there are no adjacent provinces that allow reconnection with the homeland, the army stationed in Bavaria will only be able to defend against enemy attacks or attempt to fully conquer the province itself if it is only partially controlled.
o The neighboring province must not already be under attack by other states.
o The attacking state chooses between an Open Battle or an Encounter Battle, both large-scale, fought on the terrain of the targeted province. An Encounter Battle is a large-scale Open Battle fought on a map 28 squares wide and 40 squares high, designed to simulate the unexpected confrontation of two marching armies that suddenly discover each other at close range.
o If, in the same turn, two neighboring provinces are subject to mutual attacks (e.g., the Austrians attack Mecklemburg from Silesia, and the Danes attack Silesia from Mecklemburg), both battles will be fought separately, but the outcome will be determined as a single result (as further detailed in the Combat Phase section).
• Major Attack: Similar to a standard attack but costs 35,000 Thalers and involves an army of 2000 points for the attacker and 1800 points for the defender. The defender, however, may opt for a Defensive Battle (2000 vs. 1675 points).
• Truce: Once per turn, a state may impose a truce on a neighboring state (that has not attacked it) by paying 25,000 Thalers. A truce can be imposed only once per campaign against the same opponent.
COMBAT PHASE
During the Combat Phase, battles resulting from attacks are played.
Battle Outcomes
• Draw: Both armies exceed a 48% rout threshold.
• Marginal Victory: The winner’s routed units are between 1% and 15% fewer than the loser’s.
• Tactical Victory: The winner’s routed units are between 16% and 30% fewer than the loser’s.
• Strategic Victory: The winner’s routed units are at least 31% fewer than the loser’s.
In the case of mutual attacks involving the same two provinces, the result will be determined by summing the outcomes of both battles, each of them giving the following point values:
• 0 points for a Draw
• 1 point for a Marginal Victory
• 2 points for a Tactical Victory
• 3 points for a Strategic Victory
The final outcome will be determined based on the point difference between the two states:
• If the difference is 1 point or less, the clash is considered a Draw.
• If the difference is 2 points, the clash results in a Marginal Victory.
• If the difference is between 3 and 4 points, the clash results in a Tactical Victory.
• If the difference is between 5 and 6 points, the clash results in a Strategic Victory.
The winner will be considered as an attacker.
Consequences of Battles
• A Draw has no consequences.
• A Marginal Victory grants the winner 10,000 Thalers, taken from the loser.
• A Tactical Victory grants the winner 10,000 Thalers, taken from the loser, and +1 Morale level. If the winner was the attacker, he gains half of the targeted province.
• A Strategic Victory grants the winner 10,000 Thalers, taken from the loser, and +2 Morale levels, while the loser loses 1 Morale level. If the winner was the attacker, he gains full control of the targeted province.
The presence of a fortification downgrades a Strategic Victory to a Tactical Victory and a Tactical Victory to a Marginal Victory.
If the losing state lacks sufficient Thalers, its Treasury goes negative (e.g. – 10.000 Thalesr), and wont’ be able to launch any further attack until he close the deficit.
A state with a National Morale of 2 or less may not launch Major Attacks.
CAMPAIGN CONCLUSION
At the end of five turns, each state’s strength is evaluated based on the following Victory Points (VPs):
• 100 VP for each fully controlled province.
• 40 VP for each half-controlled province.
• 1 VP per 5,000 Thalers in the treasury.
• 5 VP per National Morale level.
The state with the most Victory Points is declared the winner.
If two states are tied, they will fight a very large-scale Open Battle on an agricultural map to determine the winner. If three or more states are tied, they are all declared winners.

Re: CAMPAIGN ANNO DOMINI 1740
To launch the campaign five players are needed, possibly ready to play up to three match simultaneously, in order to make the game progress quickly.
If no one else is interested I'd like to take the Austrians.
So, if anyone is interested just join the fray and express your preferences!

Worst starting position, right in the middle, with no way to defend yourself, surrounded by a bunch of aggressive psychopaths.

Re: CAMPAIGN ANNO DOMINI 1740
Well done gribol!
Yuo're certainly right when you emphasize the difficult position of the Anglo-Hanoverian but, at the same time, it must also be said that your army is pretty damn good and you're one of the best player of P&S!
No doubt you'll be a very tough opponent to beat ...

Re: CAMPAIGN ANNO DOMINI 1740
gribol, you should specify from which of your provinces the attack is launched and if you opt for an Open Battle or an Encounter Battle.
At his turn Nigel will have to specify if he opts for a Defensive Battle, instead.
