Capitana Vegas - Whitewashing Francoist history?

Post by RobotGeneral »

I use to play Panzer Corps 1 and recently bought 2, and started with the SPain CIvil War DLC.

Now generally I feel quite uncomfortable playing Axis is any game, since I find it weird being happy for "roleplaying" helping them win their gecodical war, considering the atrocities that happened in real life.

But I did not have *that* much of an issue with PC1 because it was strictly about the battles, with minimal background given and truth be told, there are not that many games of this type from the side of the Allies, or at least with the equal number of details and mission ( Please Slytherin Allies Grand Campiang when??).

However after I started playing PC2: SCW I came across one of the worst whiteashing I have ever seen: Capitana Vargas.

She is presented as an officer of the Nationalist army, can personally interact with Franco, who promotes her on the spot, and is presented as a type of HQ support throughout the missions ( or at least as far as I have reached) for the officers of the Condor Legion.

This is *extremely* ahistorical and outright crazy considering that "traditional family values" were core concepts of both Farncoism and Fascism/Nazism meaning women should be stay-at-home moms breeding and raising the next generation of Aryan children, or at best only do "feminine-oriented" work like secretaries, nurses etc.

The Spanish Civil War was a particularly egregious example, when women were not used in any combat capacity even in situations as desperate as the Siege of the Alcázar.

One Wikipedia quote:

"Falangist women activists were often divided into groups, which were largely based on age. Younger activists were often outside the home, working on Nationalist goals in Nationalist women's organizations. Older women Nationalist activists believed they should be outside the public eye, serving Nationalist interests by working in the home.[31] Nationalist women in more rural, less cosmopolitan cities, often had more privileges than their urban counterparts. They were able to leave the house, regardless of their marital status, and engage in the everyday tasks required for living. Few people noticed and cared.[13] While Nationalist forces believed women should be at home, the realities of war meant that women were required to work outside the home, in factories and other businesses.[31] During the war, Nationalist publications encouraged women to stay at home in service of the family. They were discouraged from shopping, going to the movies, and engaging in other behavior viewed as frivolous by Nationalist male leaders"

It was the *Republican* side that had women in both leadership roles and combat roles, though not without major anti-feminist push back, even from this "progressive" side.

So Capetana Vargas's character is extremely absurd, a Nationalist woman holding a combat and officer role, and being able to speak on the same level as a Nazi officer and *Franco* himself is as absurd as having an openly practicing Orthodox Jew being the right-hand officer of Himmler giving orders and briefings to Wehrmacht Officers.Which completely eradicates the victimization of these population groups.

I try hard to headcanon that she is a male, but it's extremely offputting in a game that supposedly celebrates "historical accuracy". If anyone has a mod or method to change her to male btw, it would be greatly appreciated.

So WTH Slytherin?

Panzer Corps 2 is only historically accurate in that the battles themselves, the units involved, etc, are accurate.

We have deliberately made the choice to avoid the death / politicial / horror / warcrime / sexism / racism / nazism / etc part of the war and period as much as is possible, while still offering the players an immersive game.

This is not part of any "washing" effort of any kind - it's simply that it's meant to be a fun game - and the issues you talk about here are not subjects that can or should bring anyone joy.

I am concerned that, this being your first post, this is a throw away account that is trying to invoke a rage/flame response.

So, in the case that this is a genuine concern, our response is above. But just in case this is just about provoking the community into breaking our rules on hot topics, I am going to lock this.
