Order of Battle: World War II - New tournament open for sign-ups

Post by tebaf3 »

Open - May/June 2024

Do not miss the chance to sign-up to the new tournament "Open - May/June 2024". You can sign-up here.

There will be 3 Tournament Maps:
  • Round 1: Island Hopping
  • Round 2: Wake Island Assault
  • Round 3: Crescent Bay
The tournament follows Swiss Tournament rules: you can find the full list of rules here.

The first round will commence on Tuesday, 14th May 2024 at 11am GMT. No further entries can be accepted after the tournament has begun.

The tournament will last 3 rounds, 16 days each. Games are paired, so each matchup will be played both ways. All you need to do is sign up, then the system will pair you with opponents and create your PBEM++ games. You will be notified by mail of when the tournament is starting and when it will be time to play your turns.

I signed up a couple of days ago. Are we supposed to get a confirmation email (I haven't yet)?

posted to anyone...

This is my first tournament with OOB, but I have played other Slitherine tournaments. I figured how to get on and set up my first deployment... but I was confused with this.
Having played the Pacific tutorial prior to the tournament I kind of knew what units I wanted, but I did not see anywhere that told me how much I could buy or what or where was the running tally as I bought. I also did not know whether I was supposed to buy all my units for the scenario or gradually throughout the game. I assume as I get objectives, I will get resources to spend, but I am not certain about this also.
The game seemed to let me keep buying but when I went to deploy them a lot of the units were not there ... like a carrier. I was just ignorant on how I should be setting up for the tournament play. My opponent has not come online yet I believe because only one of the two games were available to log into.
So, if you could give me a quick rundown on how the picking of forces work during a tournament, I would be grateful.
Any help you can provide to indoc me to the initial sequence of selecting one's forces would be great at this point. I figure this tournament will be a real learning adventure.
I am not asking for help with strategy, etc... just the tournament mechanics with setup...specifically selecting one's forces...
Thx.

Hi Ron,
There's nothing substantively different about tournament and usual OoB setup and deployment. You can spend as much RP as you have available buying units even if you cannot deploy them - look at your cp limits which determine deployment ability. Remember if you have not signed off the deployment phase you can still change your mind and sell back units at full value before you do. Check your objectives carefully and plan accordingly. If you have not done a pre-tournament playthrough of a scenario the information about reinforcement can be vague. Even in these "simple" scenarios there are a plethora of approaches which can suggest very different initial unit selection depending on your strategy, so I can't really advise on that! However if you go for a rational approach you will always be in with a shout. Do beware though that there are some tricky make-or-break "alternative" approaches out there... Always expect the unexpected! Sorry not to be more help!

Andy... thanks for all the info. It was very useful ...especially since I played the 1st scenario when I did not see a quick response. I need to be more patient, I think. I learned a lot from making mistakes in the scenario and you have just added some icing to the cake of good information. Wish you the best of luck.

@Celeborn

You can play against me if youy want and if the admins can arrange that :) . My assigned opponent is not showing up...

Another one who doesn't respect other people... I know some problems happens in the life but the least of things is to apologize when one is prevented from playing for some reason

Congratulations also to Rth for 3rd place. That is quite the accomplishment since you got screwed out of completed scores for rounds 1 & 2. It is very tough to finish in the top 3 without all three rounds being played to completion. See you again next tournament.
