Re: The Prussian Heyday Round 5
Shocking news from Gravelotte (France)!!
Prussian troops pushed the French out of their positions and pressed relentlessly towards Metz.
The French, commanded by Marshal Dilly, dug in on the line of hills starting from St. Privat. Only a madman would attempt to attack such fortified positions.
But the Prussians found a way to do it. Half a day of consistent artillery fire disheartened the French soldiers who had been stuck in their trenches since the morning, and the Prussians, thanks to the protection of the forests and hills on their flanks, managed to get close enough to the French positions that even Dreysse's cow legs could hit someone. Thanks to this, the Prussians managed to achieve local successes in several places.
However, a frontal attack on a flat, unprotected area, directly against fortified lines full of infantry, artillery and mitraleuzze (what a devil...) ended with the massacre of the Saxon regiments.
Either way, despite terrible losses, the Prussians remained alone on the battlefield and can be treated as winners. However, it was rather a Pyrrhic victory...

Re: The Prussian Heyday Round 5
The Prussians lead by Doyley have lost against my French at Gravelotte.
After hours of devastating artillery bombardment, the Prussians assailed the French wings, holding back in the center. The French left wing had good fortune shooting up the Prussians advancing through the woods, despite the limited visibility. The French right had more issues, but still, they managed to inflict harsh casualties before routing, and the Prussian units that took the rightmost positions found themselves disordered and under heavy fire from the walls of St.Privat, at which point the Prussian army broke.

Re: The Prussian Heyday Round 5
My battle against SMJohnso77 has ended in a very bloody mutual destruction.
His initial long range shooting was more effective than mine, but his attack through the woods onto my left flank was repulsed with heavy loses.
I withdrew my right flank from his strong attack there and used the troops to reinforce my centre. After weakening his centre with accurate musketry we counterattacked and turned to enfilade both his wings.
But his very strong left wing overwhelmed us and both armies shattered.
A very close game with only a few % difference until the very end

Re: The Prussian Heyday Round 5
The Road to Metz is opened, Verdun is surrounded and Moselle wine is on special offer at supermarkets throughout Germany.
Prussians 13% routed French 42% routed.
The Prussian infantry spent the morning tidying away breakfast and preparing lunch whilst on orders from high command (General Gribol) the artillery shelled the French lines, concentrating on the infantry in the open on the French right. A number of French units routed under the sustained barrage and although many would later rally in the rear; the French front lines were left somewhat denuded. Once all the Prussian units had arrived the line advanced; aggressively on the Prussian left, where the Guards were to the fore, and more cautiously on the right, where the French were in better fortified positions. Despite the terrific fire from the deadly French Chassepot rifles sheer numbers overwhelmed the defenders of Roncourt and St. Privat and with a gaping hole where the French right had once been the battle was over.
Well played by my opponent, gallantly defending whilst greatly outnumbered.
Peter

We have one more result to come in, that between Ironclad and W_Michael. Apparently its in its final stages.
In the meantime we will start the final round, which has a different format to the previous rounds

I don't know how to report this battle. The French were down slightly, but they survived to the end of the day, which gave them a victory.

Re: The Prussian Heyday Round 5
The screenshot is correct. It is designed so that the Prussians have to beat the French to score a victory anything else is a French victory. Well done for holding off the Prussian horde (sorry stepped out of character then).
Re: The Prussian Heyday Round 5
So that concludes round 5.
The score is Prussians have 14 wins, the Austrian/French have 10. Both have 1 draw.
So the French must win all 5 games in round 6 to win the tournament, the Prussians just need 1 win.
