Bad Players, Bad Loosers

Post by ElLobo »

It´s nice, we have an October Chess Tournament, and i was looking forward to play it!!
But slowly these tournaments are getting silly and stupid,....
Nearly every time i´m playing versus a kid, that can´t loose!! She/He stops playing, of course real live and enough stuff is more important, but i´m waiting since 3 days to play the last turn!!!
Of course its not nice and everyone wants to win,...
neither i like to loose, but in such a tournament i continue(otherwise i would surrender or give up) playing, also when it´s not a fun, but its necessary!!
You need to finish the things you start!!!
What your doing in real live? running away? not the best solution facing problems or unliked things!!

I´m sorry for my opponent: but you need to get it finished!!!

and please slitherine change the pointing system,.....i don´t like to loose points for such a stupid thing!!!

Who else of you is rid of these kind of players?

I think the scoring is wrong for this.
People get 2000 point for not even playing a turn against a no show
I got 1300 point against a game that went almost to the end That I won both matches and he quit because of it.
I should of got more then 2000 points. I had center point in one and was going for his back point and in other game I was one turn away from center point.
I got 700 and 600 points respectively.

I personally don't play these Multiplayer Games... however!... i do quite well understand... "The Pain Of Defeat!". Even against the "AI", never-mind against a "Human Player"... it's a most disruptive-destabilizing- ego thrashing... painful humiliating experience!.

So!... i am surmising that this could be where "Your Opponent"... "is or at" or what they "might be experiencing"... it's truly not unlike being poisoned, then having the reaction of the resulting excruciating pain... included by some very-nasty painful consequence... to something ingested that was unknowingly unsafe and dangerous.

One has to be "Tough!"... tougher than they want to be!... and take a losing streak or loss like a "Grown-UP"... with "Big-Boy-Pants-ON!"... and accept that they have much more to learn in order to turn-around their present adversities into future successes!. One must give-up on the pretense or idea that they are a "Legend in Their Own Mind!".

"Losing is Learning!"... you will "never learn without losing!". "So Never Give Up!"... success only comes from pressing ahead!... despite the frequent "Tumbles and Falls!".

Hello!... maybe "Your Opponent" is too traumatized and disheartened to even try to play again?. Anyway!... why-not send him a copy of my "Posting" to you... to him for his review... maybe it might help out?, give it a try!.

I was just thinking about how hard it can be to finish this game when you are on the losing side. I just finished the latest tournament round and lost on both sides but I tried my best to finish all the turns, but just so my opponent could get his deserved points and wins. I have a love hate relation with this game. In chess tournaments it feels it is worth playing to the end, even when loosing but with the other multiplayer scenarios there is almost no opportunity to change the tide when things go wrong. So I had to force myself to play the last five turns (on both sides, ten total) without any joy or hope or fun. I just gave myself the task to at least not to loose one last victory hex, that at least gave me another reason to play besides wanting to be an honest opponent not afraid of loosing. But I think that in most other multiplayer games there is always something to win or fight for to the end but I have the feeling that it's lacking in this game. I was positively surprised to see that a lot of people, like myself, do finish their games while loosing badly. The balance can be very off when you are allowed to choose your own units freely and your opponent gambles better on which units work best. In the last turn I had this line of four long range artillery hopping over the mountains towards my last hex, flooding everything with shells, the horror.

I wrote this in another thread but I guess it is more suitable for here:

In round 2, the time ran out before we could complete all the turns because my opponent stalled the game by not playing his next turn. On some occasions he took 3 days to play a single turn.
His score, after his last turn (and at the end of the round), remained the same, indicating he was never penalized in any way.

If stalling is a common practice, this issue needs to be reviewed and adequate measures taken to curb this.
After all, this is akin to cheating and most game developers / moderators do not take lightly to that!
Why is it allowed here!?
It is unpleasant if you are on the loosing side, it is understandable, but it takes away from the game and the fun of it for the other player.

I would suggest a "capitulate" option for the loosing side, which would allow some positive points to be added to his current score (as an incentive - the score can be based on his number and type of units left alive), and the maximum round points then awarded to the winner (same as opponent forfeit).
Each turn should also be limited (for example one full day) and the stalling player penalized by either deducting from their in-game prestige or from their round score. If you enroll in a tournament, you should be prepared to also take part in it and a full day is more than enough to find 30 minutes to play a turn.
Eventually, if the game is incomplete at the end of the round with turns still left to play, the player that kept the last turn stalled should lose all their round accumulated points (or maybe half). This alone should deter players to even consider this ugly tactic.

The stalling does not only block the winner from playing the full game, but it also stops him from achieving maximum points and equally be matched with the stronger opponents on the next round. In my last game, the reason I did not get very high scores is because I was still in the execution of my strategies and counting on the full turns count.

I'm lucky to have great oponents so far but I feel your pain. According to rules you should be rewarded with some additional points.

Fortunately, on the last scenario, I was eventually matched with an experienced player that played, and allowed me to play, the full scenario turns.
Anyhow, I feel these are not the best scoring system rules at the moment - they need updating, specifically towards the turn based characteristic of the game that allows stalling. A penalty that actually hurts the stalling player should be introduced. I get the feeling that the rules were cast at the beginning but never tweaked after that with data and experiences collected from the various past tournament.

Edit: It happens in high ranking games too, my opponent stalled the game for his last remaining turns as the defending side, after winning his attack. All he had to do was just to end turn. Not nice. :(

And I have to admit I was a bit worried he will not finish his game, but eventually all ended well.
