Combat results seem far too "random" - any way to tighten up the combat results?

Hi, and still playing FoG2 regularly (solitaire). My question involves the huge range of combat results: for a given combat, I might get a catastrophic result on one attempt, whereas if I save and re-play the identical combat (perhaps in a different order) I might get a triumphant rout of the enemy on the next attempt.
I surely understand that ancient combat could cause wide swings in results, but my question is: is there any way (or existing mod) that can "tighten up" the combat results, that is, permit a narrower range of possible results?
