And FOG 2:Medieval are really good games!

I'm sure a lot of game developers end up mostly hearing from people that have issues with their game but trying to put more of a positive spin on things in 2023(the negativity tank is overflowing) I really wanted to praise any and all that had to do with creating these games. They are really good.

I initially bought FOG 2 with all the DLC and the base game of Medieval during the winter sale of 2021. I don't always get a lot of playing time and I just started playing multiplayer during the recent winter tournaments so it took me awhile to form an opinion on the game. I have come to love them and it was quite the surprise to me. When I first bought them it was mostly just on a whim. It was the winter sale and I had my anniversary coupon but I didn't really have anything in mind to buy. I checked out FOG 2, it seemed a little hokey to me( I knew nothing about it) but I was reading a bit about the Roman republic and listening to the History of Rome podcast so I wanted to give something with ancient battles a try so to avoid wasting my coupon I bought both games.

I was shocked how much I ended up liking it. It was real easy to just jump in and start playing but there is this subtle depth of complexity that just makes the game intriguing almost chess like. I played against the computer for a bit and then finally ended up giving multiplayer a try. That is a blast and I even have fun getting my butt kicked(well most of the time :D ). The PBEM system is a breeze and easily keep multiple games going. Having played in a couple tournaments now I realize I have barely touched the list of armies that are included. I'm definitely hooked and see myself playing these games for a long time. This last winter sale I picked up all the DLC for Medieval to complete both games and will grab the new DLC in Feb for FOG 2.

Well that was just a lot of words to just say really nice job to all involved and thank you!

Keep the tournaments coming!!

I would not say almost chess like, I would say 100% chess like and GO like and any thinking game like. I played Fog 1, a bit competitively until my twins were born and stopped. I eagerly picked up FOG2 in 2017, or was it 2018, and have been playing ever since, albeit I don't torture myself with 5 tournament divisions anymore.

When I saw the Queens Gambit on Netflix a couple years ago, that convinced me that FOG has the same quality of depth as any thing out there, granted the RNG means it is not pure skill. Still, seeing that series, which is excellent, gave me a starting framework, which I modified to account for our game, to help me to make sense of the depth FOG offers:

1. List Force selection
2. List deployment
3. The opening
4. The mid game
5. The end game

An example is my use of skirmishers, including light cav. Back in the day, I thought these units were wasted points. Now, I always take some if I have the option.

1. List Force selection- take skirmishers to get at least parity or advantage - always take a couple of light cav
2. List deployment- screen my infantry and or set out wide on the flanks
3. The opening- press advantages, threaten flanks and rear to draw more expensive counters, if advantages are present, influence opponent to brake ranks chasing my light down, exposing inf to flanks and autoflanks
4. The mid game - withdraw from the front to protect flanks and rear from any cav threats
5. The end game.- preserve light cav as best as possible to run down routed generals and re rout rallied units.

I am sure others have good ideas and different preferences but for me this framework has helped me to make sense of the incredible depth this game offers.

5 years in, I am still loving it.
