Magister Militum
I'm scouting out miniatures companies and I've heard good things about Essex Miniatures who certainly seem to have a very good for FoG but I've come across Magister Militum who do too. Has anyone gotten miniatures from them, would you recommend them, especially in relation to Essex Miniatures?

I can only give a sculpting quality answer. I love them. I think they are very nice miniatures. However mine are all 10mm.
It may be different for 15's. I think you should buy a pack and see what you think for yourself. One pack is going to be able to be used mixed in with anything, and they aren't that expensive. I very much doubt you will have wasted your money (as per some other poor manufacturers).

Nice quality figures, although my Persian infantry had their bows slung over their shoulder not round the waist. Also there doesn't seem to be a lot of pose variety.
However, have a major issue with their website. Not only do they make you use a randomly generated alphanumeric password that is impossible to remember but the password they gave me doesn't work. I have tried typing it in manually (several times) and pasting it in from my hotmail account but it just won't go through so I have not been able to order. When I e mailed them to tell them this they just sent the password again (which I pasted in and which again didn't work).

Magister Militum took over the Chariot miniatures lines. I think they have other figure lines as well, so YMMV.
I have Chariot figures for my Kushite Egyptians and for my Dominate Romans (LImp Romans, circa 365-370 AD).
The Chariot figures are truly excellent, but I agree with the comments above regarding size. They are small and would not mix well with Essex IMO.
For Biblicals, Chariot not only look fantastic, but the size issue is a strength. Specifically, the chariots fit onto 40x40 bases without the surgery and manhandling that Essex chariots require.
Their Late Romans are really excellent figures and between the Late Roman line and the Dark Ages line, they provide everything you need to kit out the army. I don't know much about their Punic Wars/Republican Roman selection, but if you find figures to cover all your troop types, then a complete army of Chariot figures will look great.
I am pretty sure they have everything you need for NKE. If they do not, you should still consider their chariot figures, even if you opt for another manufacturer for the infantry. The more useable size of Chariot chariots (:D) more than offsets any inconsistency you might have with infantry from other manufacturers.

For LRR I'd also suggest Old Glory, LKM and quite a few others.redben wrote:Thanks for the replies. I'm going to be building a Late Republican Rome and New Kingdom Egpytian army.
For NKE, you should deffo include Black Hat on your shortlist.

I have a mix Chariot and Essex for my biblicals and EA Persians and have never found it to be problematic. I don't think any are mixed on the same base, but height-wise they are pretty close. I really prefer Chariot for cavalry and horses, they are much better sized and proportioned for the period than Essex.spikemesq wrote: The Chariot figures are truly excellent, but I agree with the comments above regarding size. I have some Chariot carthaginians as well that are mixed with Essex and don't seem problematic.
The one thing I woudn't do is mix Chariot and Essex horses, go will all one or the other. But infantry IMO is fine.

I can't agree with your statement that AB has poor quality. Their issue is that they have a limited line as it was sculpted for a museum in Germany.JCgoose wrote:I got some Essex Spartans and Crusades period turks and through they were great. Then went and got some of the AB models and loved the extra poses but found them to be much poor in overal qauilty.
AB has Sassanids, Early 1st Century AD Romans and Hoplite Greeks. You will NOT find a better sculpted line than these. You are limited in poses, however.
Anthony's Barton's figures are only surpassed by his own sculpting. The AB line is really 18mm and will only fit in with bigger figure lines such as Museum and Old Glory. If you can find Battle Honours Ancients, they were sculpted by Anthony too, although I think he has improved markedly since the BH line.
I do hope Anthony decides to go back and sculpt ancients again. But I believe his Napoleonic lines sell quite well and he isn't looking back.
I can't speak to the Chariot lines although I agree that their 10mm line is quite nice.
The original question didn't focus on what period/army.
If you like well sculpted figures, check out Corvus Belli. I think they mix in well with Essex. They are limited to Early Imperial Romans, Carthaginians and 100YW English. They are better proportioned than Essex IMO.
