Playing MOM as a Totally Blind Gamer

Post by BlindGuyNW »

Hi All,

I wanted to write as a fan of fantasy strategy games, who has always been interested in playing Master of Magic. I happen to be totally blind, and thus found the DOS version slightly difficult to deal with as a screen reader user.

I have been interested in this modern remake ever since it was announced. THe game is not currently very playable with my screen reader, but I have hope that given how moddable Unity games tend to be, it might become so.

For the moment I am trying to figure out how to handle basic tasks such as figuring out what is around my units, moving them on the map, and so on. I am aware that a lot of information appears to output to the game log, and hope hat perhaps this could be leveraged to provide some game information.

I currently have access to a screen reader with OCR capability, a lot of patience, and a strong desire to enjoyy the game.

I would love to talk to any developers or people more familiar with the game to figure out a way this could work. I know it's possible, the entire thing is turn-based, and much more complex accessibility work has been done before.

Any thoughts or ideas are very much appreciated. I believe there's a lot of potential in the game yet, and it's still very much early days.
