Winter Wars - East Karelia (S09) - 40 arty kills in 10 turns

Post by pupski »

So, I played a lot of Order of Battle and I am getting the hang of it a bit. But playing Winter Wars again, one of my favourite campaigns, I came to this challenge again which could win me a experienced artillery unit. Make 40 artillery kills in 10 rounds is the challenge. But how? Playing pretty save without to many losses and getting all objectives in the other scenarios, not wasting money, I just start te scenario with around 350 credits. That's only enough to buy 1 extra artillery unit making the total 2. (when not buying an extra airplane) I start pounding the easy targets, visible targets in range like arty and fresh infantry but after 10 turns I muster only around 15 kills. It is not even making the kills but there are just no targets in range and my artillery also gets very tired after some turns. So, the big question: How did you, yes you, manage to do it?? It must be possible in some way but I tried many. Please help me ArtyOneKnockouty, you are my only hope!

Okay, I take it back, last try I got to 37 kills with one strong and 3 light arty units. But it plays very counter intuitive at first, just passing by light units with infantry without shooting at them so the artillery can have a go at them. But I get into the vibe, and actually I have maybe less casualties than normal. So I'll try again, and/or again :-) But credit wise is seems not logical but it is feasible.

One heavy long range and three more mobile light artillery units is a good strategy for a core. That's the typical organisation in many real divisions. Less would be indeed troublesome for this particular secondary objective.
Artillery is truely the game changer to lower the enemy's efficiency and bash through suppressed units. Saves a lot of RPs on repair costs for your "melee" units.
Never leave your house without an AT- and artillery unit on your back! :P

I managed to get 46 kills in 10 turns so it is doable with a bit of effort.

I also found this objective rather silly, you have to field 4 artillery unit to get a fifth. Also you have to be very slow when starting this scenario, holding back your melee units and mainly doing only damage with your artillery against enemy AT, AA and artillery, for those are the ones where you can do more than 1 damage per turn, for even with 4 artillery units you would have to do 1 point of damage every turn per unit and you have to rest each unit twice in 10 turns and maybe also move one.

To be fair, when this scenario was released arty was much more damaging to health rather than efficiency like now..

There's probably a case to reduce the goal a bit when we do a patch

Also, I don't think arty lost efficiency like it does now

I suppose that the difficulty of this objective also depends on the difficulty of the game: if we play with difficulty IV, the enemy units are stronger and therefore more resistant to the enemy artillery ?

I'd say it was easier on higher diff. More HP which means more damage (arty does less hp damage to weakened units)

For now I toned it down to 15 for the next patch. Which is significantly easier since people above posted that right now you have to adjust the whole playstyle and probably buy extra arty to get another free one in the end, which seems over the top.

Definitely. This objective's slightly troublesome, and no problem on higher difficulties, but seriously... I'd imagine it to be a real nightmare on difficulty level I...
You would need an army of arties...
I guess "15" is an okay compromise.

I know it's too late, but this commander should have been the obvious reward for this:
