More observations.

I've been having a great time with this game so far.

Two things I've noticed

First, I don't know if I missed this in the tutorial or not but I discovered, by accident, that you can combine units to make more powerful units. In fact I have seen the AI do just that. If you have a lot of low level units it can be a cheaper way to have a more powerful army because you only pay the upkeep on the resulting power unit plus didn't have to buy one.

Second, it appears you can have a stalemate on certain maps. If you put two level three units of two different types next to each other, they cannot be attacked. This means you could find a choke point and simply sit there. Though I doubt it would happen too often since the upkeep is so high and I doubt the AI would sit still long enough, I could see it happening between two human opponents.

I'll post more as I find them.

Combining units is unfortunately overlooked in the tutorial - although it is an intentional feature and not a bug, and in some cases may be the only way out of a tight spot.

It is possible in theory to block a choke point with a pair of level 3 units - but in reality you would need to have a lot of tiles behind you to pay for them, it would greatly deduce the number of other units you could field and on most maps there are either multiple ways around, or there might be a single choke point, but without enough tiles to pay for the 2 units needed to block it off.

I'm sure that if you were to sit and play with the random map generator for long enough you would eventually get a map which can end in a stalemate, but the number of maps where it could happen is so low that you could spend a month playing games with another human player and not have it happen.

True enough. On the random generator it would be hard to find a situation where a stalemate could develop. I only discovered it on a map I made where I had only one entry into each player's home territory. Fortunately after I clicked the end turn button the AI moved his forces away from the entry and I waltzed in and made my own inassailable wall. It's a good thing to keep in mind when making maps.
