Troop numbers when army and ally are combined.

Post by Zardoz02 »

Is it documented anywhere how minimum and maximum troop type numbers are determined when an army and an ally are selected?

An example. If I choose 2000 points of a 600 AD Hindu South army I can take a maximum of 13 (3+10) elephants. If I choose a 650AD Rajput army I can take a maximum of 10 (3+7) elephants. But when I combine these two as army and ally I don't get to take a maximum of 23 elephants. Nor do I get 23/2 elephants. I get a maximum of 13 ... 10 (2+8) Hindu plus 3 (1+2) Rajput elephants.

How are those combined numbers derived from the per-army numbers?

Very approximately, the combined army consists of 25% of the ally army list, and 75% of the main army list.

But don't expect the totals to exactly match that, because numbers are rounded to nearest whole numbers, and numbers below 1 may get rounded up to 1.

Also some units may be flagged in the army list file as not to appear in allied contingents. Currently that only applies to Praetorian Guard.

As I see it, taking an Ally allows to get units you wouldn't have in your main army, not more of a unit you already have in your main army (23 elephants in OP example).

Actually, sometimes an ally will net you more of a troop type that is in your list. Sometimes having an ally will reduce the minimum number of required troops allowing you a little more flexibility. It's always a good idea to compare lists because of that.

Thanks. That's clear.
