Eastern Archers?

Post by mejobo »

Is there a logic behind Eastern Archers/provincial Archers with the Phrygian cap being inferior to more Mediterranean archers (i.e. bare-headed)? I may be missing something, but it seems to create a substantial imbalance for any eastern power when dealing with full frontage vs. full frontage battles, as they essentially don't have an potion that shoots/supports better than light cavalry.

Probably lots of things to do with that. Starting from the style to pull the bow (during Ancients, in East the bow string was pulled with the thumb, while in west three fingers were used to pull the string => much more force) to how the troops were tactically used on the battlefield. For what ever reason, eastern archers were considered in ancients times to be inferior to western archers.

Do you have a source on the assertion that eastern archers (Scythian, Persian) were considered inferior by the hellenistic world? I'd note that the different styles of draw in use around the world don't determine the draw weight of the bow, and generally bows used on the steppe were quite powerful (and used a thumb draw, with a thumb ring).

For example, Cilician Archers are Ranged Attack 8, compared to Hyrcanian Archers Ranged Attack 5.

I have noted the remark for the next patch, thanks. I'll adjust accordingly.
