2 separate questions/bugs

Post by Warg1 »

Hi

In a recent game I had a couple of weird things occur and wondered if they were bugs.

1) Can't do a quarter turn at the edge of a map. I moved some med foot 2 squares to the edge of the map then went to turn the unit diagonally(to allow it to do a flank attack on the diagonal next turn) but could not click on the square (as it was at the edge of the map). So I was prevented from turning diagonally one square.

2) Fragmented troops charging.

I had a fragmented unit which won a combat and pursued the enemy. It then came into contact and charged that other unit. I didn't think fragged units could initiate combat if fragged.

Hi Warg.

1) you should be able to angle, you can certainly do it on edges, so units evade off table if charged.
Was your unit outside command range and therefore didn't it's free turn?

2) I've seen this one too.
Fragged units will pursue if their opponents break and they are a troop type that usually pursues e.g mounted, warband etc.
I think the rules then treats then as pursuers, rather than fragged, so they can make a converted charge.

Re 1...the unit had the general with it so no problem there. I could do the quarter turn next move but the problem is to effect a turn you have to click the square you want it to face..and as it's off board you can't click it

This is more a feature than a bug. The game engine won't register the mouseover for a square that is off the map edge, so you can't do a 45 degree turn when facing directly towards the map edge. I will look and see if there is a potential fix, but I suspect not.
2) Fragmented troops charging.

I had a fragmented unit which won a combat and pursued the enemy. It then came into contact and charged that other unit. I didn't think fragged units could initiate combat if fragged.
This is working as designed. In the temporary enthusiasm of pursuit Fragmented troops are intentionally allowed to charge.

Thanks Richard. Not a biggie to fix the 45 degree turn. Not a very common occurrence to do that and now I know I can take that into account. & understood re the Fragged pursuing charge

The problem arises, when the charge of the fragmented brigade happens to be a flank/rear charge and it causes automatic disruption in a unit that happens to stand in the way. I actually seen it in one of the battles I played and it actually cost me that battle. If a unit is fragmented, then it is fragmented, then it shouldn't cause such damage. If it's morale has been raised, then it is not fragmented, then it's shouldn't be marked as such. This is extremely important, Richard, because in order to master this game one needs to get all the relevant information from user interface and from the ruleset, and too often that's not the case.

I understand your position, but this rule is working as intended and isn't going to change.

I take your point about the manual, but a revision thereof isn't likely to happen any time soon - although hopefully we will be able to do a revised manual at some time in the future. The rules on Charges in the manual cover only the Charge order - not automatic actions by units in pursuit.

Have you considered involving the community in such a revision project? I'm sure there are plenty of people here who would be more than happy to contribute.

The issue isn't revising the text, but laying it out professionally.

It's always possible for the community to create a FoG2 wiki, including updated rules in a form of an online manual. Not sure though whether the Slitherine forum platform supports that technically.
