Custom Battles

Post by Lukew »

I love the new Ambush Battle feature. There are a few other improvements I would like to see for the future if they are possible

1 A "megalomaniac option increasing available points to somewhere between 3000 and 4000 allowing for really big custom battles. Additional generals to control the extra units. This would allow for really big Medieval battles involving 20000 a side or more

2 Allowing the purchase of generals of differing quality generals for points. Add a Great Captain option , perhaps only available if the megalomaniac option is chosen allowing for the presence of the Great Man himself (perhaps men like Genghis Khan, Richard the Lionheart, Saladin. Perhaps only allow such an option to armies that had such a luminary during the man's military lifetime

3 Add a special list for the 3rd Crusade allowing for the mixed spearmen/crossbowmen

4 A couple more scenario types could include a side being attacked crossing an otherwise unfordable river. A FightingMarch scenario might also be a possibility

5 It would be nice ifsome more of the multiplayer scenarios eg Saule, Muret could have solo play options

6 Allow player selection of flank march or ambush force for relevant scenarios and whether these will enter on the left or right flank

Thanks.

With regard to item 5., those battles are user-created content and hence we have no control over whether the creator chooses to produce MP or SP version or both. Producing effective SP versions is harder because of the need for AI.

Also it would be nice to be able to dismount units capable of dismounting during the battle but without a remount option

No specific list that covers only the 3rd Crusade, but a list that covers, among other things, the 3rd Crusade and that includes combined spearmen and crossbowmen units :

A Pavisier is a crossbowman with a shield

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavise

I am referring to the mixed units of crossbows and spearmen used bty Richard the Lionheart in the 3rd Crusade

Speaking of the Crusades there might be scope for a Second Crusade list with a combination of Europeans with Crusader Allies and something similar for certain other Crusades. Crusader armies themselves are representative of Outremer

Quoting your own source :
A pavise (or pavis, pabys, or pavesen) was an oblong shield used during the late 14th to early 16th centuries. Often large enough to cover the entire body, it was used by archers, crossbowmen, and other infantry soldiers.

Read the "Capabilities" on the pic above : Crossbowmen 66% + Defensive Spearmen 34%
or... use the unit in a battle
or look at the 3D model on the battlefield.

Strictly speaking the spearmen in Third Crusade mixed units would not have used a pavise, but a normal shield, although late 12th century shields were still large kite shields. However, our models budget is limited, so we used the Pavisier/Crossbow models as seen in Italian armies. The in-game rating would be the same even if we did have Third Crusade period models.

Though not a priority the possibility of mixed spear/crossbow units might be worth considering for the future. We have other, similar mixed troop types for ranged fire and melee. This would be another such unit. Other developments I suggested such as increasing the points values to allow larger armies ib custom battles, the inclusion of Great Captains and new scenario types seem more likely to enhance this game's value both from a historical authenticity perspective and from a gaming fun point of view.

Paying for better or worse commanders or, for that matter more commanders would need to come at a cost in points. The Great Captain should only be available to the factions from which he came. This might be extended to other named personages including poor commanders such as Guy de Lusignan, creating a historical flavour for those who like this facet

The Pavisier/Crossbow units are mixed spear/crossbow units.

There will be other mixed units in later DLCs.

Nice. Hopefully, you can implement some of the other ideas. It would be good if it there was some way to select your flanking forces and the flank upon which they arrive, Randomising the arrival of a flanking force in the ambush scenario would be good, perhaps as a scenario option in itself. Sometimes things go wrong.

Scenarios where an army is attacked while crossing an otherwise unfordable river might create an interesting challenge

Also a Medieval campaign like FOG Empires would be most welcome
