Open terrain looking like rough
Open terrain looking like rough
Some open terrain tiles looks similar to rough terrain. The elephant on the picture is on a open tile but it is surrounded by rough. Is it a bug or a feature ?

Re: Open terrain looking like rough
When a rough tile is near an open tile, there is (fortunately) a bit of rough on the open tile where both tiles meet so that the transition is nice. In the case in OP, as you mentioned it, the open tile is surrounded by rough so that there is some rough from all directions. (Maybe the transition/overlapping coud be smaller.)
The same open tile (in red) near 1, 2, 3 rough tiles :

Re: Open terrain looking like rough
It's probably that indeed, and it is extremely confusinh. I would much prefer an empty tile without any transition/overlap .
I might have been better if the transition had been done the other way round ...

Re: Open terrain looking like rough
I for one disagree. I like the overlap. And we need to see the rough on the rough tile.
If the current overlap is an issue for some players, I guess it could be made a bit smaller :

I like the overlap too. Much more aesthetically looking with gradual change between and across tiles. Plus that it requires more attention to detail (which in my view IS is a PLUS). And actual terrain is revealed through the use of tooltips anyway.

I'm playing a strategy game because I like to think that if I won, it is because I was better at strategy than by opponent, not because I have better eye sight or "attention" to irrelevant detail. Mileage may vary.kronenblatt wrote: ↑Sat Sep 25, 2021 8:14 am Plus that it requires more attention to detail (which in my view IS is a PLUS). Re: Open terrain looking like rough
The visual detail is relevant here, in my view,, just like awareness of a lot of rules specifics, not good eye sight, makes a player better at a game. And as mentioned, we always have the tooltips to help out if needed. But as you said, everyone's preferences a re different.BMAXIMUS wrote: ↑Sat Sep 25, 2021 8:45 amI'm playing a strategy game because I like to think that if I won, it is because I was better at strategy than by opponent, not because I have better eye sight or "attention" to irrelevant detail. Re: Open terrain looking like rough
Indeed. I think you are images from FOG medieval which is better indeed.
You can see on the following pictures that the overlap is much bigger in FOG2. In open3 the blue tile is open (surronded by 3) the red is rough.
The main difference is the tile on the right (green).
In fact the overlap is so big that an open tile surrounded by 4 rough (open4) is the exact same tile as a rough tile surrounded 4 four (open5).
Of course you can check with the tooltip but that is not the case with Medieval ...

Yes, the blue open tile looks a bit excessive in its roughness.

I think RBS once said this ambiguity is intentional as it forces players to look more closely or something like that.
