I have always been interested in wargames, but I have never actually played one. I realized that finally slithertine is having a huge sale and i'm wondering how you guys feel about this one?
Is it an actual wargame with a lot of strategic depth?
Does it have a interesting campaign with a decent story to go along with it?showbox speed test

Try the Fantasy General II: Prologue on GOG.com, it's free. That's where I started and I was hooked.

Why I don't play FG2: The maps are scenario, and it's very deadly if you don't know it. However it may be pleasant if you first see spoilers about the map.
PanzerCorps2 is better about this (but for other reason I don't play too), as if you are carefull you don't lose so easily your reco units.
But the best wargame is Gladius (you still too have to learn about the story missions, but they are all integered in the big one battle).

This one does have a lot of depth to learn and master, if you ask me. FG2 also has a quite clear combat system to tell why are your winning/losing a fight. Terrain, status effect, unit trait, formation, scout, defensive position...all of them requires a clear mind and flexible tactics to be dealt with. The only pity, in my opinion, is the lack of a reserve system like Panzer Corps does, which makes specialised units in your amry obselete when the battlefield does not fit them. As for story, yes, every FG2 campaign has its own story well written and linked with each other. Some choices during your campaign can have severe effect on certain part of the game (anger a character/a faction and causing them to leave/unable to reach an alliance with them, for example), but none of them would "lock" you from finishing the campaign itself.

Re: how is fantasy general 2?
it is truly a great game.
we need more difficulty settings though because once you know that to do even very hard becomes a walk in the park except the lizard campaign. empire aflame could use a higher difficulty setting with like double enemy army size from about the sunken lands and the barbarian campaign could use 2 more with double and triple enemy army size after sunken lands.
