FoGII to Empires conversion question

Hi, just a quickie, in tactical combat - do the Spartans ever upgrade to their armored version in either the original game or DLC, or do they stay with only the protected armor?

In Field of Glory II without relation to Empires, the Spartans have different levels of armor depending on the time period. So 6th century hoplites are armored, but 5th century tend to only be protected. This is to reflect the gradual lightening of the panaply
