Clash of Empires results - pics - comments

Post by expendablecinc »

Clash of Empires was held over the weekend of 16th and 17th May and was one of
the easiest ones for me (as umpire) that I have run.

There was significant difference between lists which spanned 3000 years. There
were only a couple of light horse-laden armies (Ghaznavid and Komnenen
Byzantine). So no steppe battles but despite this there was plenty of open
tables for those that wanted it (and for some that didn't). Some of the armies
were quite large (eg 16 battlegroup seleucids) however the top two armies had 11
and 12 battlegroups respectively so army size didn't seem to have a major impact
on results.

Best painted Army was won by Mark Woods for the Xyston republican romans he
finished in the days prior to the tournament. He submitted his army list before
having painted anything which put the pressure on but didn't affect the quality
at all. I took plenty of photos so hopefully we can get some up on the web site
soon. Other notable nicely painted armies were Geoff Tindall's Seleucids and
Tim Roe's Byzantines.

First place was decisively cemented In the final round by Richard Cleary and his
11- battlegroup Medieval Crown of Aragon. His opponent - Chris Schlipalius - was
on equal top points after round three but due to this last round defeat dropped
back and second place was taken by Geoff Marshal and his Minoans.

The tooth and nail award went to the player who destroyed the most bases of
generals and death rolls - and who did not get either second or first place. it
is an award sometimes referred to as the 'Mayhem award' or in other comps as the
'take no prisoners award'. This was won by Andrew Reeves who despite scoring
lowest out of all of the full tournament entrants killed the most bases of
troops and generals. The King of Aragon was hear to be shouting across the
field "If I am going down I am taking all of you with me".

The Seleucid's are also worth noting. The two Seleucid armies were played on
alternate days by players who were only available for one day each (including
myself as bye player on day one). Although obviously not scoring well over the
whole comp they scored two wins each individually, so scored 92/100
collectively.

We had excellent support from sponsors and all in attendance were thankful for
them helping to make the tournament such a success. Not only were we able to
reward successful play but also the modelling aspect of the hobby and provide an
award for those not on the top placings.

Sponsor prizes included:
- Figure vouchers from Essex Australia and Olympian games
- a voucher and a painted battlegroup of classical eastern archers from APC and
DPS painting service (a new DPS painting distributor within australia)

I don't think the club will be booking a venue for a full weekend again in 2009
however I hope to organise a 3 game comp later in the year with a more
restricted theme over a Wednesday and a Saturday - possibly doubles - possibly
pre-dark age - possibly 1000 points. Dancing in the dark? With 4 pairs of
doubles each will play every other pair once.
