Kriegsmarine AAR: Scenario 2 Norway

Here’s a Kriegsmarine AAR. Paradogs Gamer covered Scenario 1 in a Let’s Play video, so this picks up with Scenario 2 Norway. For my debut I’ll use multiple posts to the same topic to keep things manageable and contain any flubs. My humor does not intend to offend anyone in our international community.

Since the conclusion of hostilities in Poland, In preparation for the liberation of Norway, new Kriegsmarine personnel passed through the Kiel Naval Academy. Additionally, sailors of the BB Schleswig-Holstein were thanked for their service dating back to the Franco-Prussian war and given their pensions. The vessel’s coal stores were distributed to poor of Danzig, and the breaking yards recovered 26 RPs of her iron.

Our 2 Konigsberg class CLs were replaced with Deutschland class CAs, and our command was stiffened with a new Hipper class CA and two 1936 model DDs.

Task Force Nord with 2 CAs, 2 DDs, and air recon will escort the landing troops to Narvik. After debarking the liberators, orders are to rejoin the main group screening any enemy adventurism into the Vestfjorden.

Task Force Sud will steam due north to intercept a pair of British BCs, believed to be unescorted and attempting to prey on civilian coastal fishing trawlers. A Condor Gruppen will assist.

So inserting images into this interface is a bit, uh, tricky. I'll repeat the deployment information here.

Task Force Nord with 2 CAs, 2 DDs, and air recon will escort the landing troops to Narvik. After debarking the liberators, orders are to rejoin the main group screening any enemy adventurism into the Vestfjorden.

Enemy assets are immediately revealed en route to Narvik. Our DDs block the narrow fjords, and the CAs engage the warship- reducing it’s strength by half. No contact in the south.

Enemy return fire is ineffective A 2nd salvo from the Deutchland sinks the Norwegian DD, while the Hipper and DDs pulverize the gun boat, ignoring the merchantman for the moment.

With the roads to Narvik open, the lead elements of our northern command begin steaming west to rejoin the main group.

In the south, the Scharnhorst spots and engages a Brit privateer at range with little effect. Enemy return fire scuffs up our decks, but as we close 2 DDs launch torpedoes and our gunfire hits home.

A lucky enemy shot lands on our destroyer. He advances hoping to draw more fire as tubes reload, and another torpedo attack scores a hit on the fish pirate. The Scharnhorst maneuvers to score a pair of hits with main guns. Assisted by the Condor and one DD, gunfire from our CA sinks the first Brit.

The remaining buccaneer is too confused to score another hit. We concentrate our fire and he joins his shipmates at the bottom on the Norwegian Sea. As our air assets fly west to reconnoiter, we’ll steam south to hide in the island fog and wait for reunion with our Task Force Nord.

Although our DD was out of position to supply the landing, his shore bombardment effectively reduced the garrison, and our troops prevailed. Narvik is liberated.

Turn 7: A number of British DDs have arrived south of our rendezvous position. A lucky torpedo damages our DD. He’s unlucky but plucky, and moves forward to draw enemy fire while our gunners rake the enemy line. The lead elements of Task Force Nord are just arriving.

A British force sailing south has blundered into our Condor. The bird is running low on fuel, but launches a series of attacks until forced to break off and return to base. Our Arado recon has reached the area to witness, and spots an enemy carrier who has already launched a torpedo bomber.

The Brit DDs are joined by a Light Cruiser and a torpedo attack damages the Scharnhorst. Task Force Nord is just in range to deliver payback. The DDs of Task Force Sud have reloaded, and swarm the Brit CL as our CAs begin finishing off the enemy DDs.

The Sud DDs concentrate their fire where it will do the most good, and sink the enemy DD. Our CAs make quick work of the Brit CL, and the tail elements of task force Nord finish off the last DD.

Although we’ve taken some damage, eight enemies are on the bottom, and we’re all still afloat. As the Condor heads for home to refuel, the Arado shadows the Brit sortie, and we form up again in the island mists.

The Brits close in a ragged line and raise a little sea foam. The Liberators Of Narvik stumble onto a mine as they attempt to join the fight. A flight of Me 110s are approaching to deal with enemy air.

Our DDs won’t hold back. They surge forward- many still completing their reloads. We manage one torpedo attack on the Brit CL. Our CAs lager up to concentrate their AA fire in anticipation of the Fairey’s touch, while banging away at the enemy DDs.

The Fairey ignores our CAs but sinks our damaged DD with a single touch of her wand. Our furies respond: half the bombers are shot down, one crippled DD yet floats, and their CL is ready for our fleet’s focus. After that, we'll chase the Fairey to her nest and burn her out.
