Unexpected things I'm noticing

Post by General Shapur »

Well, have played a fair number of games now - yep all fun, but I'm noticing some interesting events. Im wondering if its just me and the luck virus.

1. Raw spears seem to hold out really well
2. My mounted knights seem to keep bouncing back a lot rather than getting stuck in
3. It worth charging mounted knights with spears even at bad odds - it usually comes off ok

1) That might just be a run of luck combined with the importance of that +1 to cohesion that all heavy infantry get. I've definitely seen them get steamrolled by charging heavy lancers, and also had them hold up power units for a couple crucial turns. Definitely helps if there is an engaged general boosting cohesion checks nearby.

2) Repeated knight charges needed to break infantry seems like that's working as intended.

3) I've seen infantry try this and disrupt on impact, but I've also seen infantry survive due to cohesion bonus and pile in to force melee. Always seems to bounce for me when I need it most, and stick for my opponent when I want it the least.

Raw (and below average, I think) heavy foot no longer gets +1 to their cohesion tests. Raw spearmen are still pretty good, though.

Interesting, wasn't sure that actually got formally implemented. In that case, it's damn impressive that the raw spearmen I've been knight charging have held firm despite losing multiple times on impact. Presumably the nearby general in combat helped a bit. Clearly I've lapsed in my offerings to RNGesus........

One on one you can be lucky, but if you use a line of raw spearmen unsupported to stop charging knights chances are that they are gonna break in a couple of turns. One unit comes disrupted and then eventually break, you cant support them because your infantry gets destroyed by charging engaged knights, they one unit runs nearby units loose cohesion, etc. I think raw spearmen are more useful against enemy infantry (absorbing missiles and engaging shooters, flanking with superior numbers) than against cavalry.
