Can't mod Squads file

Post by Mord »

Went through and edited the Squads file to increase some model counts, created the correct folder structure and placed in My Games/FieldOfGloryMedieval/Campaigns folder but nothing changes. Tried multiple times, double and triple checked and can't get anything to work. Any ideas?

I also noticed there was no Mods folder so I was wondering if modding capabilities haven't been added yet? Maybe that's why the squads file won't work?

P.S. Yeah, I bought the game. Still don't like the terrain but it isn't as bad as I initially thought. I am trying to mod that back too.

PM me and then we can exchange email addresses and you can send me what you have to look at and see if I can figure out what the issue is.

I found the problem. The modded squads file shows up in game if you load it outside the normal file structure. So instead of having it in the Mass Effect folder/data folder, I just put it in the Mass Effect folder. I got the idea because I'd noticed when I forgot to put the TILES folder in the data folder it would partially show up in game. When it's in the data folder the modded terrain doesn't show.

UPDATE: Ok. I must've had a massive brain fart, looking back at some FoG II mods it seems the squads file doesn't need to be in a data subfolder like it is in the main game build. I got it working. I should've looked in an older mod first instead of the Medieval main game.

I apologize for wasting your time on that one.

Yes, mods use a slightly different file structure to the main game files. Just look at the file structure of the TT Mod or Silk Road mod to see where things go. Also the Objects and Tiles folders sit straight in the main mod folder, not within the mod's Data folder.

Also, I think you have to create the Mods folder (for Global Mods) yourself, the same is true for FOG2 Ancients.

Thanks. Yeah, I haven't messed with any new modding in the last six months at least and totally spaced it!

Yep. I just created a MODS folder and gave it a go and the squads file works fine that way too.

The file tree for Mods is different from in the main game. (Not sure why).

You can find it at the end of this document:

The answer to almost all these engine oddities is "Historical Reasons (tm)". We do try and crawl toward a cleaner layout (e.g. the mods) but it's not an inconsiderable task, and it would break older content if we changed mid-game.

Cheers
