I have several army units with a gold star on their icon. What does that mean?

I've looked in the manual, searched here and in steam and found nothing. The only thing the occurs to me is that it seems to appear when a unit hits level 5. Would that be a correct assessment?

That is correct. They get 2 stars if they hit level 10.
