I just noticed that you cannot rename core units in the editor during the deployment phase.
At least not units that have already gotten a custom name.

Edit: To be precisce, you can rename the unit but only from scratch.
You can't edit the present name, custom or otherwise.

Erik, I think the renaming actually works, you just don't get the "preset" name in the edit window.

And, of course, the refreshing of the name doesn't work in the units list so you have to check the name in the UI below.
