30 Years War - Round 4 - set-up and results

Post by ahuyton »

So, here are the details.

The formerly Protestant side now subtly switch to playing the French (Catholic) while the former German Catholics make a seamless transition to the Spanish.

Armies to use:

French 1643-1648
Spanish 1635-1648

As usual: Open battle, large armies, wide battlefield, agricultural terrain.

We welcome several new or returning players (Nosy_Rat, Cromlechi and GentlemanRanker) and say a temporary "hasta luego" to Fybyyn, who may be very busy with the worrying corona-situation in Spain. Here are the match-ups.

French players v Spanish players (Spanish to set up games please, within the next week if possible)

Kiwiwarlord v Tomoegozen
Nosy_Rat v Snugglebunnies
Gdod v GentlemanRanker
Cromlechi v Awesum4
ahuyton v smjohnso77
Gribol v Lascar

Have fun and please report back regularly to this thread!

My game against SMJohnso77 just finished, with the French infantry winning the day (as predicted by Snuggles). We both played aggressively, using the preset armies provided by the challenge set-up. With cavalry on either wing and strong infantry centres we both advanced to combat.

On my left, my inferior cavalry got thoroughly beaten-up. One mistake lead to a remarkable cavalry charge with one Spanish unit killing 5 of mine in 2 melee rounds. Horrific. I was quite worried then as the enemy cavalry started to advance towards the rear of my infantry.

On my right, before a wood, my cavalry got the upper hand and dealt handy damage to the enemy horse.

Meanwhile in the centre, I decided against using the impact foot advantage as this only works if you disrupt the enemy on impact. So we shot, shot and shot and then charged when we had the advantage. This did the trick and the Spanish collapsed under the pressure of my higher number of units.

So a nice game, well fought

I regret to report that I have defeated Nosy_Rat's French, 64-51. This does not really support all my arguing that the French are the stronger army, though I will point out that I had a pretty hefty terrain advantage.

Here is the recording:

A very bloody, close match.

Its unpredictability and the multiplicity of interacting factors are part of the beauty of this game, aren't they ? :-)

I quite agree. The more I play the game, the better I like it.

Our next team event will be 'Ottoman Turks and their enemies. Perhaps you can be tempted to join us?

Result for Round 4
KiwiWarlord, French, 20% TomoeGrozen, Spanish, 48%
Win for Team Protestant.
The battle spread across the whole field as both sides rushed their Left Flanks trying to get an advantage, both our Right Flanks were turned and hammered badly. The Centre was where the Papist Tercios were spread thin and destroyed. A great game was had by the both of us, Tomoe is a skilled & friendly player and an asset to these Team Events.

Spare a thought for our good friend lascar ( Dave ) who as well as fighting against Gribol's French in Round 4 is also fighting against all the smoke & ash descending on his home in Portland Oregon.
Lets us all hope that he does not have to rush out from the flames carrying his trusty war machine PC under his arm so that he can finish Round 4 ......
Our thoughts go out to you Dave and Ruth, we pray to our Gods that Rain is on the way and the wind will change.
From all your PC Gaming friends.

14th Sept. Just had a move back from Dave with good news, winds have calmed, some rain has fallen, now out of danger from the fires. Just has to put up with the most polluted air on the planet. So that will be two masks now, one for smoke the other C-19 :)

Referees ruling required:

Seeing as a clearly drunken GDod has posted the AAR of our battle to the wrong thread, does that make it technically a win for me?

I claim a magnificent Spanish (moral) victory! Admittedly we left the field to the enemy, and may have suffered a just a few more casualties ... We could have kept on fighting, honest! Only we knew that Alan wanted to wrap things up, we were just doing the courteous thing by routing.
