My artillery didn't get iron cross after 100 kills in GC, defensive artillery bug?

Looks like my artillery didn't get the iron cross medal because it got its 100th kill from defensive artillery or something, what does this mean for my unit then?

Am I not going to get a hero now on it? Is the unit ruined? I hope not

This used to confuse me a great deal in the Grand Campaign because it was happening to several units and never the same ones.

You have correctly assessed the problem that when they earn the kills through defensive fire they fail to earn the medal awarded for that achievement.

It does not effect anything else in the game just do not get that particular medal. I believe this will happen with planes that earn the number of kills for defensive fire, but I have not had it happen.

Ah okay, thanks goose! I need those heroes, may have gone a bit overboard with hero farming (because of your advice lol), I have 63 experienced units at Sedan

Pretty hard to get two recons with a spotting hero which is what I want, last playthrough I got two right off the bat which was very lucky and that has spoiled me now.

Btw, do you think it's better to only use the same units (with overstrength ideally) to get their first hero ASAP without buying more units, or is it better to get 1-2 stars on a bunch of units first and spread out the kills more?

I'm starting to think the first option would be better than what I'm doing now, since it's pretty easy to get 1-2 stars of XP. I may restart my GC, right now I have about 25 or so units with 125+ kills that are about to get their first hero. I disbanded 5 very bad heroes so far and only got 1 good one, arty with +1 movement which already made a ton of difference on my 15cm.

I find heroes to be the most exciting thing about the game, there's always a chance you may get something crazy. And I used to play with only 1 type of unit each which was fun but too much micromanagement, now 2 of each seems a lot more sensible instead of using a lot of weak unit types like pz1s.

Unsure if I should just man up and not farm at all, just accept whatever I get since I get 3 rolls of a good hero anyway for each unit :/ That could be fun as well, no army and hero micromanagement and especially during fights to ensure the right units secure the kills, just focusing on the best tactical play and everyone is always at max XP etc. Could be liberating not worrying about kills and heroes?

This is a tough choice....

The important thing to always keep in mind is to play the way that helps you enjoy the game.

I always could go back and play it differently or better.

You can only play blind once...this is always the most difficult, which makes it the most exciting.

I always worked in 1939 to get units around 2 stars experience
1940 to that 3rd star experience or first hero
1941 same
1942 now this is where it gets real. You need that deep bench and experienced heroed units to go for broke in the latter scenarios.

1943 onwards you need 3-4 stars on almost all your units and 2 heroes to make the punchy breakthrough to make it to the end.
