Hellenic vs. Hellenistic?

Post by kronenblatt »

What's the practical in-game use of differentiating between Hellenic and Hellenistic ethnicity? No factions seem to be Hellenistic; even Antigonos, Seleukos, et al, are Hellenic.

hellenic = of mainland greece/colonies stock if we are talking about ethnicity
hellinistic = greek speaking locals from the conquered ex persian empire that the epigonoi carved up. guess the local aristocrasy became more or less hellenised, the common folk less so.
since the whole era from the laste 4th bc to the late 1st is named hellinistic its not terribly inaccurate to name the epigonoi generals as hellenistic than hellenic though they were greeks in origin and in speech.

thats my uneducated take on it.

Thanks, gaius21: I'm aware of all that though.

My question concerns the difference within Field of Glory: Empires between and use of Hellenic versus Hellenistic, since I cannot find any factions or provinces that are Hellenistic; both the Diadochi and the provinces are Hellenic. Is the Hellenistic ethnic group at all used in FoGE?

This is my take on the issue. (Note that I am developer of FOG2 not Empires).

Hellenistic is a historical description of states ruled by a Macedonian ruling class or adopting the Hellenistic culture/military system. It is not an ethnic group. Even Macedonians were Hellenic (even though the southern Greeks might disagree that they were "proper" Greeks).

The game does have special rules for the Diadochi (Hellenistic) states, but they do not affect their ethnicity.

Note that ethnicity is used in the game to determine which military system a state uses. So it wasn't necessary to have both a "Hellenic" ethnicity and a "Hellenistic" ethnicity, and it was a toss-up which term they used to describe the Hellenic/Hellenistic ethnicity.

OK, thanks Richard. So it seems that it can be assumed that the Hellenistic ethnic group (again, for in-game purposes, not its historical relevance) is not used at all?

True. Good placeholder for future updates/DLC. Or opportunities for own modding. :)

Actually I did not know that there was an in-game Hellenistic ethnicity. I only look at the units database, which as far as I know does not have one. If there is one, it may be used for other purposes. I guess you need an answer from Pocus.

I believe some units have Hellenistic specified ( as an ethnic group as a whole) but none have Hellenic group. But for factions, it's the other way around; none have Hellenistic but all Greek/Macedonian (successors) have Hellenic.
