Auxiliary units

I have auxiliary slots set above zero for the player. Configuring units and checking the Auxiliary box doesn't work because if I hit apply and it unchecks itself. Do I have to do LUA wizardry to make units Auxiliary?

Current work around I can think of is to limit purchasable unit classes in scenario params. And set the core unit slots so that it is perfectly maxed out. This way it forces the player to only buy the type of auxiliary support units I intended on putting on the map. I guess if they use "custom army" settings it doesnt matter... because they could disband all units and make their own army... I guess I'll recommend against this.
