BATTLE RESULT:
Hrothgar (Parliamentarians) won vs flatsix518 (Royalists). (4% routed vs 40% routed)
This was a somewhat complex battlefield broken up by a number of woods. Both armies followed a traditional deployment. Hrothgar was more balanced with his cavalry evenly dividing his cab between his wings with a couple of units in reserve. I weighted my left with a majority of my cavalry.
Hrothgar did a nice echeloned advance, refusing his right flank. There was not much I could do on the right with the cav I had there and as the Roundheads began shooting out my center I advanced the Cavaliers against the Parliamentarian right. This maneuver was way too late and did not give me the desired counter-play. The Parliamentarian firepower was simply overwhelming and shattered everything before it.
Hrothgar is the first Parliamentarian opponent I've played that used his foot this aggressively. I had no answer for it -- the Roundheads shot my army to pieces.

However, sometimes a well timed flank march could be really devastating, did you remember that betatest game in which a single cavalry unit routed almost your entire left flank?rbodleyscott wrote:Not only that but I have played more than one game in which the AI gave me a flank march but I did not notice the popup message on the deployment turn. There are no further messages after that until the flank march actually arrives. So when the flank march arrived it was a complete surprise to me as well as to my opponent.TheGrayMouser wrote:Anyway the only "solution" would be to force players to resign games immediately after one players is notified of a flank march, however, you are not notified of this until after at least 1 or two turn swaps prior to getting to deploy. That is an awful lot of wasted game time, especially in a tournement with timetables and the fact that players often are in different timezones..
Having to abandon the game on turn 26 (which is approximately when my flank march arrived vs AEMIL) would not be good!

I do indeed, but it is the exception rather than the rule.Aryaman wrote:However, sometimes a well timed flank march could be really devastating, did you remember that betatest game in which a single cavalry unit routed almost your entire left flank?one of my few victories

Re: Pike & Shot Caracole Tournament Thread
While we are on the subject of flank marches in Open Battles, when the AI deploys either army, any units that "fall off the edge of the map" are converted into a flank march. This can happen with armies with lots of cavalry if the other side of the battlefield is clogged up with terrain, so that the AI tries to deploy nearly all the cavalry on the open wing. This also means that flank marches are more common with large armies on narrower than normal maps.
This is in addition to the chance of the AI deciding for the second side to deliberately send a flank march.
It is possible (even in an open battle) that both sides will send flank marches. If these are on the same flank, the larger one will drive the smaller one on to the table in front of it.
I guess the message is that the edge of the map is not the edge of the world, and is therefore not necessarily secure flank protection...

Game Starts and Challenges
How are things going with game starts and challenges?
Have most of you been able to get your games going with your match ups?
I know in my case, one of my opponents and I have wrapped up -- but I'm not even started with the other.
Let me know how it is going...
