I won't be issuing or accepting any round 3 challenges over the next 2 days. I look forward to playing them after that.

Another suggestion for future tournaments
I think there is a problem for players with early bad results losing interest in the tournament. I would favour a system in which only players with a chance to win the tournament get through.

I would favour a Swiss chess system, which is now standard in tabletop tournaments.

The 2nd round draw is based on the scores so far, and so on. This does of course mean you have to wait till the first round results are in or a time limit is reached before doing the 2nd round draw.

But the advantage is that as the rounds progress the players come up against opposition that is closer to their own level, so they are less likely to be repeatedly massacred and give up.

And at the end you print all the positions at the end of the tournament, not just the winners. So people are not just playing to win the tournament (which isn't a realistic goal anyway for the majority), but to end in a higher position hopefully than they did last time. And in the meantime to have fun playing against opponents of approximately their own level of experience.

It helps to maintain the interest.

Round 3 challenges:

vs guillaume: rbodleyscott (Weimarian 1635-1643) vs guillaume (Polish 1633-1648) PW: caracole

vs vadim84: rbodleyscott (Catholic League 1619-1632) vs vadim84 (Bohemian Revolt 1618-1619) PW: caracole

If either of you would like to do the same matchup the other way round for our other games that would be fine, or you could set up something different.

"Widowed Players"

Post by flatsix518 »

All,

We have a few players whose opponents seem to have quit participating in the Caracole.

I'm going to take steps to declare their non-playing opponents out of the tournament (for now -- always willing to resurrect the dead).

I'll initially try to match up "widowed" players with each other.

I may ask for a couple of volunteers who want more action to play against these players to even up their games completed through Round 3. Such volunteers will be playing "for fun" -- only the widows will be able to score points off the games played.

It may be tomorrow before I get this setup -- I'm a bit busy today with some other things.

Best regards,

John

John,

I'll fill in on some orphaned games if you like. I couldn't commit to the tournament when it started but can certainly get some games in to help out now.

Nik,

Thanks! That's great.

I'll try and organize something for our community of widowed players.

Abandoned Players (i.e. "widows")

Post by flatsix518 »

All,

Please identify yourselves to me either on this thread or PM.

You'll be in this category if you've got a game that has gone stale due to opponent inactivity or unanswered challenges from Round Two.

I'll match you among yourselves with others in that situation -- that you haven't yet played in the Caracole.

After that I'll line you up for lessons from Nik and games with other volunteers.

Best regards,

John
