Well first we need a book and that is still somewhere in a uncertain future ( end november ) for a very uncertain cost ( costly ? ) ...and nowhere to preorder it ...

Not in the real world - but FUD is more fun on a forum
How will the situation be resolved when on one side of the table you have a player who has an I-pad and a digital version of the rules and on the other a player with a paper copy and the I-pad player demands that you can only use the version of his rules as they take precidence?
I can do no better than refer you to Tim's "Seriously" post.

Re: Version Control/Primacy
Tournament players have a reputation... the current angst would suggest it is deserved.
God forbid organisers stipluate beforehand in so that players know in advance or in worst case make a ruling on the day and you take it like a man...cry, stamp your feet and take your ytoys home.

Re: Version Control/Primacy
Wich I hadn't raised the question now. As Iain has said the online versions will change perhaps annually, this really won't be a problem.

Circular logic. Group X have a reputation. People take note of that reputation and perpetuate and react to it. Therefore the reputation must be merited.
And ironically (there's that word again, I'll exhaust my quota for the week), what we see here in any case is a bunch of "tournament players" on the pro-angst side (VV is most definitely a frequenter of tournaments; prb4 talks about deciding whether or not to enter competitions in future which seems to imply that he has done so in the past; bahdahbum was talking about needing a paper copy of the rules sufficiently far in advance of a torunament being organised for the end of January).

Re: Version Control/Primacy
Our experience in NZ (and indeed at the annual Australian Cancon event that a number of Kiwis regularly attend) is that reference to the rule book is an infrequent thing. It might happen once per game or not at all. It might happen more frequently if an inexperienced player is 'being taught' by a more experienced player. It might happen in the final round between two tournament tigers desperate to maximise their final points in hope of a podium finish. But generally most games are played only with reference to the 'cheat sheets', and often that's not even required.
So as long as there's at least one 'master' rulebook/pc/tablet available at a comp for reference, I don't see much of an issue.

Re: Version Control/Primacy
Agree totally. If something can't be quickly solved by a glance at the rules I would either expect the two players to come to an agreement, or a quick umpire's decision to be called for and accepted.
If a later detailed perusal of rules, or discussion on this forum, indicates that the wrong decision was made at the time - c'est la vie. Something to remember next time it comes up though.

Re: Version Control/Primacy
If and when updates are published on the formats they will be play tested, trailed, discussed and reviewed before simultaneous release on all mediums, or perhaps we should just sneak revisions out to see who we can trip up.......hmmm it's a hard call, but it would generate some interesting threads in the forums:-)
Re: Version Control/Primacy
in my experience the majority of tournament players havent read the rules for ages. Quite a bit is made up on the spot but everyone seems to be happy with that.

And then again others of us read them cover to cover before each competition. Guess which type tends to be caught out by not knowing the rules?navigator wrote:in my experience the majority of tournament players havent read the rules for ages. I can think of a number of tournament players who have had plenty of success despite, or perhaps because of, ignorance of the rulesAnd then again others of us read them cover to cover before each competition. Guess which type tends to be caught out by not knowing the rules?

Theirs!
Re: Version Control/Primacy
Leaving out the tournament folks ... During a normal game we often never open the rule book unless an unusal situation comes up. I read more of the rules after the game to help clarify issues from the previous game(s). We discuss any mistakes we have been making before starting the next game. We do use the QRS constantly ... mostly for movement.

Re: Version Control/Primacy
Personally I sold my rulebook about six months ago (expecting the V2 rulebook to be out rather sooner
). Haven't found it too much of a problem playing without it. Occassionally I need to look something up so I have a look in my opponent's book.
Re: Version Control/Primacy
i decided to read the rules thoroughly recently. I found them easy to read and enlightening....
then along comes a recent tournament game. Halfway through the conversation went...
opponent - " there is nothing written in the rules which says i cant do that "
my reply " actually on page xx, it says ....(reading from the rules) you cant do that"
electronic or wood based system doesnt make a difference if players are playing from 'unintentional pretend memory'
another top player said to me this week... " you know, its two years since i read the rules; its time i re read them i suppose."
