I wouldn't have thought there was anything wrong with the later empire having more auxilia than legio. Weren't the Legio citizens and the auxilia those trying to become citizens or those with a lesser claim to being Romans a la Brian Maximus/Cohen.madaxeman wrote:6 isn't that many? I guess so. But whether they would have put into the field an army which had most of the empires best support troops assigned to an auxiliary heavy task force with a small amount of very average legionaries....?philqw78 wrote:I wouldn't have thought there was anything wrong with the later empire having more auxilia than legio. Hi Peter and Andrea, just like to say thank you for a great and relaxing comp in Rome. The games were fun and relaxing, even playing people with little or no English. Guess beer and rolling sixes is a universal language now.
I had a lot of fun for my first comp having moved to the UK and look forward to coming to more of them. Now the Oath of Fealty has been released, I can start building my Communal Italian or Feudal Germans.
I'll be back in Rome next year.

I was talking about the army you used which appeared to me completely fine, some Super legio, slightly more auxilia than legio and some missile support troops/cav.madaxeman wrote: I guess so. Its a Roman army of the late Empire period. It has to have some intrinsic degree of moral degeneracy, surely?philqw78 wrote:But Tims army is not even marginally bankrupt of moralsthe marginally lesser bearded hamster wrote:Which is why Tim can claim the MLMB tag

What I learnt in Rome
10 Things I learnt in Rome
1. Buy a hat before going. The Hat cartel in Rome has a strict grip on hat prices, a €10 minimum.
2. How to say beer in two more languages. The Swedish for beer is OIL. The Italian for beer is beer.
3. According to Dave Ruddock Italians like their meat cold when attending a big function.
4. Ian Austin has more than 2 sheds. And his mate has at least double that many.
5. I learnt how to cross the road in a completely new way.
a. Stop, when you reach the other side,
b. Look, at the pretty ladies,
c. Listen, to the emmotional Italians,
d. Think, about how you are going to pay your medical bills.
6. Nivea is better than Vaseline.
7. There is a different sun in Italy. Their sun shines a lot, and it makes you go red.
8. Tim tried to hide the fact that he came up with a Roman list that works and is historical by saying:
a. They were the only figures he had;
b. It was morally bankrupt;
c. It would lose every game
9. Do not trust Tim Porter.
10. Ian Austin has bought 3 more sheds. But his mate has still got more than you, me and him added together.
11. I will not remember everything that happened but I can thank Peter for the vaseline tip

Well, if we are going to do a top 10 then here we go
1. Never listen to the sales blurb... Don't worry - if it rains we have awnings to cover us. Awnings my a**e.
2. Don't think that if you own a hat then you will look like a berk on the plane heading towards Rome, so don't take it. See the comment about Hat Cartels...
3. When Phil Powell calls you an alcoholic you know you have been drinking too much.
4. Don't trust Tim Porter. Especially when he moans for 4 hours about not being able to catch light horse.
5. In July it is hot in Italy. Don't expect the organisers to provide any cover. Although they are "Johnny on the spot" with sun cream.
6. When you spend 30 Euros on a meal and get 15 Euros of booze, expect everybody to whinge madly when the meal is, erm, not very good - i.e. what do you expect for 15 Euros? On the good side, this means you get at least two portions of everything
7. Apparently "Italy time" only works on Friday and Saturday. When Italians need to go early (i.e. to get home on Sunday) they can be surprisingly punctual.
8. Beer is exceptionally expensive - 5 Euros a pop... However, it does change price depending upon what time you buy it. At 4pm it is only 3.5 Euros a go.
9. German airports are murder to get through with toy soldiers. Don't ever try it.
10. Never trust Tim Porter.
11. I am not going to have an eleventh point in a top 10...

Hannibal speaks!
Latest News
Hannibal states his view on Tim Porters win in Rome
Read it all at: http://www.fieldofglory.com/news/
After the surprising, even shocking, news that Tim Porter aka 'Madaxmen' won the IWF European Individual Championship in Rome we did not rest until we got a statement from his military adviser Hannibal himself.
The old chum seemed shocked, even aghast that his (most likely soon to be former) protégé brought upon us the return of Roman domination after so many centuries.

Will be reading the next exciting installments to see how "Il Campione di Tutti Europa di FoG" 2009 recovered from this reverse!

Funnily enough the very same thought crossed my mind! I'll let you know when I next get an overnighter - but I reckon your army would be a very tough nut to crack - Pedro did very well to beat you!Perhaps next time you are in London we could have a UK vs European Championship Supercup matchup
The second game you played against the Ottomans seemed a little strange in that your opponent wasted his best troops - his Janissaries.
Looked like a good close fought tournament - well done again!
