My opinion to get more units get rid of the freighters and at more axis units at the bunkers so your arty isn't undefended. I mean the port is the most heavily defended part of the port and only patrol boats? At least at Kreigsmarine at the entrance. Waffen SS were present with the 10th Panzers! So add some Halftracks Back there with the trucks at the 301 Infantry HQ
Hey, thinking more about your "cons" posts, how about this?

I'm beginning to realise that the best solution might be to upload different versions of Dieppe... like the three versions of Fast N Sneaky...

1. there should be a plain vanilla version, close to historical events
2. we could have a version with Dieppe's air power entirely removed (so it becomes a naval/army conflict only)
3. an Allied-advantaged version (coastal guns neutered, with ranges reduced so they can only hit ships that come right up to the beach, more Royal Marines, more Churchills, etc)
4. a German-advantaged version (where 10th Panzer becomes super strong, with PzIVFs and lots of Waffen SS, arriving earlier, to play a much bigger role than it actually did)

Using 3 & 4, players with more experience could battle newbies on a closer to level playing field... and we can all experiment with the "What If" stuff...

Not something I've got time for right now, but it seems like a workable answer to most of your desires... What do you reckon?

Does anyone have time to play me two-way AAR-style...?

I'd like to put Dieppe through it's paces, to see what it's capable of :D
(and to identify where its worst flaws are, so we can fix 'em)

Amaris has pinged me a couple of excellent pieces of code that will...
(i) let us add 'ships' to our KIAs screen
(ii) permit 3 unit-loaded LCTs, freeing up space for more ground units (remaining under Slith's 64-unit side limit)

Yes. I agree. I've had this idea since we were talking about balancing history with playability etc.

I'd suggest at least three - four different versions.

One version that is as historically accurate as possible.
Another version or two that would be "What If" scenarios (battleships instead of destroyers, bombers in addition to fighters, proper bombardment etc)
A version that is historically responsible but is biased towards balance and playability. (I think that's the version we're working on now)
A "fantasy" version that basically uses the Dieppe map and Jubilee scenario but isn't restricted by history in any way when it comes to unit and equipment types etc. The primary purpose of this map would be playability and fun. (I wouldn't even call this version Jubilee etc)

It's amazing what I can miss out on what's going on over the course of a few days if I don't check for new threads! lol! Amazing!

I am downloading and would love to play from either side or mirrored games. I will also look for open games. let me know.

I think that's the best... Until you and Amaris can get these major flaws make a Fast N Sneaky for Dieppe. Then when everything's worked out bring back the original

Just did my first turn of the Dieppe raid with my opponent. Imediatly he smoked the inner harbor so my 152MM couldn't see his destroyers. Smart but his LCT's got to close to my scout friehgter. 3 Churchhills found a watery grave and I smoked out the various beaches and landing sites. All my HQ's were cleared out! Lets see how this plays out :)

I've had a few ideas about things that would make this more like an actual raid (rather than just an invasion). I'm very interested to learn how they can be done, or if they are even possible, in a multiplayer game.

To this end, I'm going to try to figure out how the following "actions" in the single player campaigns (and a few MP as well)work:
- how do engineer units repair bridges in the Husky scenarios
- how do engineers clear mine fields
- how do german infantry capture and use french armoured cars in the Blitzkrieg France scenarios.
- how do in-game dialogues, that give new commands or new orders (as in scenarios from Husky and Blitzkrieg), work.
- how does the dynamic scoring work for a few of the multiplayer matches ("Market Garden/Urban Armour" and "Operation Husky/Breaking The Etna Line").
- how do german paratroopers, in the great SP player created campaign "Crete: Operation Mercury", upgrade their weapons from pistols to rifles/machine guns when they move onto a supply canister (victory position) and how the same supply canister is captured by Allies etc. (this is a very interesting campaign, check it out if you haven't).
- how do reinforcements work.. simple turn based reinforcements and how "conditional reinforcements"* work in Market Garden, Blitzkrieg, Husky, SeaLion and other SP campaign scenarios. (*Like getting reinforcements for capturing specific victory positions, or destroying 88's, or for holding specific VPs for specified number of turns etc).

I'm most interested in learning how these, and other, in-game mechanisms/techniques work and how they are integrated into the game. My goal is to learn if/how the same techniques and mechanisms can be used and/or adapted to integrate my ideas for making a multi-player scenario more mission/operation/goal oriented and dynamic.

If anyone can shed some light, share some wisdom, or point to a resource, related to any of the above, or similar, I'd be most grateful.

Cheers,

Thomas

Jon - superb as always, you have surpassed yourself! But, given the Beta status, how do you want comments, observations communicated to yourself?

Thanks for your generous comments, Gilles! Kind of you as always... Yes, Dieppe is fun... Just lost THREE destroyers to reaction fire, playing Ranger... Have realised that the Allies cannot survive without using smoke, and lots of it, pretty much every turn... :-(

Given it's confessedly, very beta, please just post comments and observations on thread... If my shattered ego can survive the pages of major flaws revealed by LandMarine, I'm sure you won't hurt my feelings... at least, not too much, lol... Suggestions for improvements are always welcome and it looks like we might develop a few different versions (like Fast N Sneaky) to begin to tick off some of the various wish lists...

Looking forward to playing you! Meet at the cinema? ;-)
