Re: LORDS OF HISTORY, 4th edition - the usual bloodbath
That is Cannae.
Reporting a very modest Roman victory over Hannibal's Carthegeneans (sp?) in my game against UlysisGrunt (sp again)
It seems clear that the Roman cavalry must try to fight a delaying action, while the infantry simply moves forward in the center. We tried that, while hoping to gradually pull back on the main group's flanks. in addition, it seemed reasonable to not bunch up too much in the front, while keeping fragmented units protected.
The outcome was a slim victory. As seems usual, the main Carthegenian cavalry force did not arrive in time to affect the outcome.

A spectacular victory for the Romans at Gergovia!
The Arverni 62/62 (JocaRamiro)
the Romans 56/57.
I hope to aid our beloved Caesar in writing his memoirs......
Many thanks to all.
I am off to South America until just before Christmas.

What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

Re: LORDS OF HISTORY, 4th edition
The supposedly elite Xth Legion cost me the battle. On the turn they finally killed the wall unit blocking them in, I lost a final Legionaire to auto-break which put me over the line. If I'd just let the Xth Legion sit, I would have done better in the gamericoual74 wrote:Gergovia

Cannae
batesmotel (Romans) 93/120 beat iandavidsmith (Carthaginians) 120/120
batesmotel 10.0
iandavidsmith 7.75
The Romans managed to break through the Carthaginian center while delayling ans withdrawing from the two Carthaginian flanks. The Carthaginian cavalry was never really a factor although the Roman Socii on the left flank manged to pick off some Nubian cavalry for the loss of some of their own.
Thanks for the game and to Fogman for the tournament.

an old result
Lake Trasimenes
carthaginians (fogman) 54/75 vs romans (iandavidsmith) 80/75
I'll update and wrap things up once i get the last result for group 1 (Magnesia between jonathan and ian)
group 2 is over if one discounts the outstanding games involving brindlebane and stefano who are AWOL

Re: LORDS OF HISTORY, 4th edition
Final tally for Lords of History 4, the 14th edition of the Lords series.
Londo has won while I rue the aberration of my 4.6 score against Jonathan
. But since Londo went 2-0 against me, no complaint here.
Owing to the disappearance of two players, 13 out of 30 games in the second pool weren't completed.
Some stats
edit: see last post
As remarked upon, Lake Trasimene is the least balanced but every other scenario looks good in competitive terms. Gergovia needs to be tweaked because in a couple of games, the Romans went through Gergovia fortifications like they weren't there.
As suggested by the scores and the experience in playing them, the games were close; and more importantly, thanks to the implemented events based design, they have a very historical flow to them without compromising the balance and fun factor of the game. The goal of the design has always been to avoid feeling like you were playing a DAG game with a preset map and oob (which is what the games in the conventional lords series have evolved to become) but a real historical event, and this is for me is the real joy of the series, and indeed the real joy of creating the scenarios.
Onwards to Lords 15: Lords of History 5!

Re: LORDS OF HISTORY, 4th edition
Am I a disappeared player? I'm not listed in the results.
Admittedly I haven't checked the forum for a while, but I haven't received any PMs and I've been waiting for my opponents to pick up the last two challenges. I posted these challenges (and sent PMs) ages and ages ago, and then when I didn't get a response, reposted them (resending PMs as well) as a reminder.
I've just been waiting for the games to be picked up.
Best Wishes
Mike

My last three games, as yet unstarted, are against the disappeared players.
Lake Trasimene for Brindlebane (with me as the Romans)
Cannae for Stefano (with me as the Carthaginians)
Gergovia for Stefano (with me as the Romans)
What will happen to these remaining games, Fogman?
