A few rounds later, back on the western flank. The Japanese have crossed the river at several points, as the existing forces are unable to cover the entire length of the river. A more serious crisis is looming here too. From the eastern flank, depleted units are heading towards the medical field. This field is under heavy strain at this stage of the mission.

Meanwhile, on the eastern flank. I have lost my line of defence to the Japanese, who are pressing ever further towards the airfield. My tanks are managing to stabilise the situation considerably, and the Japanese infantry caught by them in the open terrain is suffering heavy losses. Nevertheless, the pressure from their sheer numbers is considerable and my own reserves are limited.

Finally, here is an overview of the strategic map. Here you can also see the historical situation on Guadalcanal in mid-September 1942: the US troops repelling all Japanese attacks from within a defensive semicircle. The player receives an MV if, at the end of the game, all primary objectives are in their possession, and a DV if all primary objectives have been in their possession at the end of every round without fail. Personally, I prefer it when, during defensive missions, I can temporarily relinquish key terrain in order to recapture it later on the offensive. But a variant like this, which pins a player down to specific positions, also has its appeal. During this first test run, I set the number of Japanese attackers a little too high, so I reduced it slightly afterwards and extended the game duration to 27 rounds.
