A few rounds later, back on the western flank. The Japanese have crossed the river at several points, as the existing forces are unable to cover the entire length of the river. A more serious crisis is looming here too. From the eastern flank, depleted units are heading towards the medical field. This field is under heavy strain at this stage of the mission.

Meanwhile, on the eastern flank. I have lost my line of defence to the Japanese, who are pressing ever further towards the airfield. My tanks are managing to stabilise the situation considerably, and the Japanese infantry caught by them in the open terrain is suffering heavy losses. Nevertheless, the pressure from their sheer numbers is considerable and my own reserves are limited.

Finally, here is an overview of the strategic map. Here you can also see the historical situation on Guadalcanal in mid-September 1942: the US troops repelling all Japanese attacks from within a defensive semicircle. The player receives an MV if, at the end of the game, all primary objectives are in their possession, and a DV if all primary objectives have been in their possession at the end of every round without fail. Personally, I prefer it when, during defensive missions, I can temporarily relinquish key terrain in order to recapture it later on the offensive. But a variant like this, which pins a player down to specific positions, also has its appeal. During this first test run, I set the number of Japanese attackers a little too high, so I reduced it slightly afterwards and extended the game duration to 27 rounds.

-> Rubyjuno: I’m always delighted that you find the examples I’ve shared interesting. This time, I’ve got something with a British connection again…

Towards the end of 1942, the focus shifts (naturally) to North Africa, alongside the Solomon Islands. Various stages of the Allied landings in Morocco and Algeria are examined and covered in depth. Here, too, French units are once again deployed on the enemy side before switching completely to the Allied side. Today, I’d like to introduce the ‘Algiers’ section, which historically resulted in a brief but fierce battle. The player begins with a landing starting at night (simulated by a sandstorm over the first few rounds) to the west and east of Algiers.

The first image shows the initial phase of the eastern, British landing operation. The only maritime obstacles are a few sea mines off the coast. There are just two French submarines and a few minesweepers in the bay directly off Algiers. The beach defences themselves are hardly a problem either. However, the coastal batteries and forts could pose a threat.

Within Algiers, there is a reinforced unit of the Resistance fighting against the Vichy troops. Although this unit has little chance of holding out in the long term, it does significantly distract the enemy in the early rounds. Two British commando units are approaching from the north. As it is still dark (sandstorm), the air force cannot yet be deployed.

On the western flank, US troops are in the process of landing. They are encountering only light resistance, but this is nevertheless resulting in some heavy casualties. The US Aux units deployed do not yet have any significant combat experience. Furthermore, the battery at Sidi Ferruch is inflicting significant casualties. The Royal Navy is providing support wherever possible.

It has now grown light. The airplanes join the fighting. But it is not only my own air force that is springing into action. The French air units are also striking hard. At the top of the map, they hit one of my core tactical bombers, which I had deployed without fighter cover. Through a massed attack, they shoot down the experienced unit. My artillery and my ships are also being targeted. In addition, his two submarines are advancing northwards, only to be attacked with some success by my two old Swordfish bombers. At any rate, his two coastal fortifications on the eastern side have been severely damaged and are on the verge of falling.

Two turns later, I had managed to significantly reduce his air power, and the two dangerous submarines had also taken heavy damage and were on their way back to Algiers – though they will never reach it. The French have been pushed back along the coast as far as Algiers. However, Fort l’Empereur is still a formidable force, which is why I’m keeping my naval units out of its line of sight and range.

The strategic map shows the overall course of the scenario, with the two landings on the flanks and the concentric attack on Algiers. An MV is achieved by capturing the primary objectives within the allotted 18 rounds; for a DV, the objectives must be captured 3 rounds earlier. Following this initial test run, I have made a few minor adjustments to some of the positions.

This time, I’m presenting the final scenario from the 1942 campaign, which I’ve put together over the last few days. It is set in November and December 1942 and is historically known as the ‘Run for Tunis’. It covers the Allies’ attempt, following their landings in Morocco and Algeria, to seize the ports of Bizerte and Tunis before the Axis powers could bring the Vichy French territory under their control. This surprise attack failed at the end of 1942, and was followed by the Tunisian Campaign, which dragged on until May 1943. The objective of this mission is therefore not to ultimately capture Tunis, but merely to occupy the surrounding area quickly enough to save the French troops, who are breaking away from the Axis powers, from annihilation.

My fleet units are advancing eastwards along the coast. As I do so, I am increasingly encountering Italian submarines, which are providing wide-ranging protection for the enemy transport fleet. The anti-submarine operations are drawing in the enemy air force, leading to a major air battle over the sea area. Fortunately, most of my ships are out of the enemy’s line of sight and are therefore not falling victim to the bombers.

In the next image, we see some Vichy French troops under General Barré who have defected to the Allied side just west of Tunis. They are thus positioned between the Allied spearheads in the west and the Axis forces in the east. These French units must be deployed with particular caution. I had the Foreign Legion attack a German reconnaissance unit near Medjez el Bab, which subsequently led to the annihilation of the French unit.

At the start of the 8th round, a significant portion of my ground forces have arrived in the crucial area. However, offensive actions by the German 10th Panzer Division are now also becoming apparent. A Tiger from the 501st Panzer Battalion is also present, with enhanced strength and a hero unit. It’s best to give this killer a wide berth. At least I currently have air superiority.

Just two turns later, both sides have reached full strength and a massive exchange of fire begins. At Djebel Abiod, German bombers are attacking my units, whilst my air force is firing on his ground troops. In the centre, a second Tiger has advanced; it was attacked by one of my level bombers and, following a further ground attack, lost its ammunition supply. Trapped like this, it will find it almost impossible to escape. All its strength is of little use to it now.

At the same time, south of the Medsherda River – the other Tiger has moved to the southern bank and is wreaking havoc amongst the French units. But here, too, its supply line is cut off by level bombers. In the following rounds, it runs out of ammunition and is then also ‘taken out’. German bombers, with Italian fighter cover, are also attacking here. But my air force isn’t sitting idly by either.

The strategic map shows the overall course of the campaign once again. British and US troops launch their attack from the west, from Philippville and Constantine. The aim is to advance eastwards as quickly as possible, link up with the French units, and hold a specific line west of Tunis against counter-attacks.

All the missions for the next campaign are now complete. Over the next three months, I will be thoroughly testing the 36 scenarios once again before I can make the 1942 campaign available here.

Excellent! It is interesting seeing your map terrain design across different campaigns. Please let me know if you would like a beta tester ;)
